For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Tim Connery, #8 on our initial list for the high school class of 2021, gave the University of Michigan Wolverines their first verbal commitment from that list Saturday evening.

I’m proud to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of Michigan! Go blue!

Connery, who swims for SwimMAC for club and Christ the King Catholic High School, is one of the most versatile swimmers in the class, and it’s not yet entirely clear where Michigan head coach Mike Bottom will end up using him.

He’s one of a relatively small group of swimmers who are strong in both back and breast (47.24/53.74), but he’s also got sprint free speed (20.42/44.31) and some intriguing potential in the IMs (1:47.85/3:53.90).

Michigan has seen success in pretty much every discipline over the past six or seven years, and it’s easy to see Connery ending up somewhere between Bruno Ortiz (sprint free/breast) and Charlie Swanson (IM/free). On the other hand, backstroke currently appears to be the Wolverines’ biggest weakness, so Connery may end up finding himself focusing more there, at least for the medley relays.

Top Times (SCY)

  • 50 free – 20.42
  • 100 free – 44.31
  • 100 back – 47.24
  • 100 breast – 53.74
  • 200 breast – 1:59.85
  • 200 IM – 1:47.85
  • 400 IM – 3:53.90

On the long course side of things, he’s been 55.93 in the 100 back, 1:02.12 in the 100 breast, 54.54 in the 100 fly, and 2:01.58 in the 200 IM. Connery was the high point award winner at this past summer’s Speedo Junior Nationals, where he won the 200 IM, placed 6th in the 100 breast and the 100 fly, 5th in the 100 back, and and swam on three relays, including the winning 4×200 free relay. He also represented the USA at the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, making finals in the 100 back and the 100 breast.

The state of North Carolina accounted for three of the top twelve swimmers in our class of 2021 rankings, and Connery is the only one who’s opted to go out of state, as both Garrett Boone and Sam Hoover have verbally committed to NC State.
