New father Michael Phelps will swim 4 individual races at the upcoming Longhorn Elite Invite in Austin, Texas that runs Friday through Monday.

In what is expected to be his final tuneup before the 2016 U.S. Olympic Trials at the end of the month, Phelps is entered to swim the 100 free, 200 free, 100 fly, and 200 IM.

It’s hard to read too far into that schedule as a preview for Omaha given that it’s just a 3 day meet (as compared to the 8 of the U.S. Trials), and given that he finished #1 in the world last year in the 200 fly, it would be unusual for him to not swim that race in Omaha.

For a veteran like Phelps, pacing through an entire Olympic schedule at this stage isn’t as important as proving his training or resting his race details as he attempts to qualify for a 5th-straight U.S. Olympic Team.

Among other highlights of the lineups is that of Phelps’ NBAC (aka, Arizona State pro group) teammate David Nolan. Like Phelps, Nolan will swim the 200 IM (he’s the fastest ever in short course yards), but he won’t be entered in any backstroke events. Instead, he’s racing the sprint freestyles and the 100 fly as his secondary swims.

Nolan is a former NCAA Champion in the backstrokes in short course, but those races are among the most crowded for Americans in long course.

We will see how good these boys are. NCAA are completely irrelevant when it comes to Long Course. Eg. David Nolan hasn’t done anything when it comes to long course, Townley haas the same. We will see how good they are in a couple weeks time, no more of this SCY crap.

Like to say something about Conger’s schedule.
Conger’s possible OT schedule due to his entry events this weekend.

day 2 200free 200free
day 3 200fly 200free 200fly
day 4 100free 100free 200fly
day 5 100free
day 6 100fly 100fly
day 7 100fly

I suggest him tries his best at day 3 200free final to secure a relay spot.
200free and 200fly have 3 events between, he should be recover enough to makes the 200fly final.
100free really is the tricky one, semi crash with 200fly final.
It is really not worthy to cost an individual spot(his biggest chance and maybe only chance) for an uncertain relay berth.
So I said… Read more »

He isnt good enough to get a relay spot without a top 6 finish. Phelps, Grievers and Lochte are all in line ahead of him. Even Grievers and Lochte are needing a top 6. Assuming top 2 plus Phelps swim final. They really have no choice but to pick the fastest prelim swimmer to be the 4th in final. Based on the new rule they have to swim #3,4,5,6 in prelims. To bump the fastest swimmer of these 4 Conger would need to go 48.4 in Omaha in the first swim and if thats the case he would never scratch cause its almost a lock that he would be top 6.

Grevers got 100back semi before 4×100 final just 1 event between, he didn’t swim the relay final four years ago, I don’t see him does the final this time either.
100free semi and 200fly final only have 1 event between, if Conger swim the 100free, I doubt he will makes the 200fly as top 2.
Like I said above, I don’t think it is worthy to cost an individual spot even for a certain relay berth.
Let’s just see the 100free prelims how he goes.
Like you said, if he didn’t get 48mid, the US can always use someone else.

For the record, the top seed of 100free prelims at Trials last time, was 49.08 🙂
The sixth place at final was 48.88.
Hmm…even if Conger throw down a 48mid at prelims, it might still not enough to persuade the coaches.

I agree,
The USA 4×100 is a logistical nightmare. If conger, grevers, lochte, Murphy, all swim the heat and a semi and they swim in the region of 48.2-48.6 (any slower not worth considering), and then withdraw, then the top 6 in the final will probably be around similar times (6th place 48.7/8), they will take all 6 athletes. Then they could have 10-12 swimmers on the team all capable of great 100free, but have to swim 3,4,5,6, placed finishers.
Let’s be honest with bowman in charge, if Phelps isn’t on the final team I’ll be shocked. Even with no trials swim, I think he has a free pass. Even if 4 swimmers dropped 47 I still think… Read more »

Longhorn Channel will be televising live finals, at least Friday. http://espn.go.com/longhornnetwork/#args=date-20160603, looks like 6:30 PM, with repeats at 10 PM CDT & 12:30 AM Saturday CDT till 2 AM. Saturday 1:30 PM is another broadcast, but does not specify what. Could be another repeat or could be recap of morning prelims. Then the schedule repeats itself from Friday evening with a repeat at 11 pm. http://espn.go.com/longhornnetwork/#args=date-20160604. Sunday’s schedule is a puzzle, but lots of swimming slots nonetheless. Too bad they don;t specify what they are actually televising. As to availability, http://espn.go.com/longhornnetwork/getaccess specifies ” Longhorn Network is available with these providers and on… Read more »

No 200 fly? A Schooling/Conger/Phelps final would’ve been interesting to see.

The Race of the meet is going to be Schooling v Phelps in the 100fly. It will be a good test for two of the four guys who will be swimming the most competitive race in Rio. Let’s see if Schooling is ready for the big time. I think he will be.

He needs to swim the 100/200free more so than he does another 200m fly so he knows where he stands going into OT.

That’s true, but still! That would’ve made an awesome final.

This is it. After Laszlo 1:52 200fly, Phelps is probably not doing that. Going for 3 relays, 100fly and 200im. 5 gold medals?

Always thought it was the most rational choice for him, not so much because of Laszlo but the drain on energy.

I’ll be shocked if Phelps doesn’t swim the 200 fly at trials. Maybe a 10-1 shot that he drops it for 200 free, about 100-1 if he drops both just to rest more.

Agreed. There’s no way Phelps doesn’t swim the 2 fly at Trials. He could always just drop afterwards, like he did with the 2 free in 2012.

Seriously. Do you think a good swim from a competitior will change a plan that has been there for a long time. MP will swim the 200 fly at Trials and in Rio.

I don’t think winning the 4×100 freestyle is that delusional.
Without the 2012 Agnel and Magnusson, France and Australia respectively aren’t as dauting.
Sure they have Stravius and McEvoy
However, Adrian is looking better than he ever has, Dressel is an absolute beast. Add Michael who has always been consistent on relays to that and maybe Jack Conger (47.7 at WUG), Matt Grevers, Josh Schneider, as the fourth member, it can be a stellar relay.

As for the 4×200 freestyle relay,
The defending WCs won’t have Dan Wallace at the Olympics, relying largely on James Guy alone.
Besides Phelps, Conor Dwyer has looked good this year, Ryan Lochte is still competitive, then there are… Read more »

So let me get this right….Phelps can and will produce a cameo but Maggy won’t or can’t……still scratching the head. And the Chalmers factor????

That’s right. Phelps has been a clutch 4×100 swimmer for over a decade; Magnusson wilted on the Olympic stage and has not looked good this year. Of course, McEvoy is shaping up to be the difference-maker in that relay, just as Agnel was in 2012. But I’d be surprised if the U.S. wasn’t at least close for gold.

And anyone who thinks the U.S. isn’t the favorite in the 4×200 just hasn’t been paying attention. Who can beat Phelps + Lochte + Dwyer + any 1:46- flying start?

Team GB are missing Callum Jarvis who (with a low 1.46 200 and 48.6 100) is a far bigger loss than Dan Wallace.

Usa is no match on the 800 free relay – they will win that one hands down . The 400 free relay , i predict an unexpected win for Usa as well . This time , they will get that gold . They can do it

We will have to see what times will be delivered at OT and who qualifies.. Also who will be taken (Talking about the rule of MUST use relay only swimmers)

Yeah, you are right. Laszlo just swam essentially the same time Phelps did last summer so after another year of solid training by Phelps and swimming faster in season that last, he should just throw in the towel on the event. Makes perfect sense, because the other events won’t have any competition 🙂

You think Phelps is scared of Laszlo Cseh lol? This is the same guy who took on Thorpe and Hoogenband in the 200 free in 2004. He has beaten caeh every which way his entire career. There is nobody who can bean an in shape Michael Phelps in the 200 fly. Laszlo will not beat Phelps in rio in the 200. His golds only come when Phelps is absent.
