Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte To Face Off In The 100 Freestyle At Bulldog Grand Slam

The prelims session of the final day of the Bulldog Grand Slam has wrapped up in Athens, Georgia. Day three features the 200 IM, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, and the remaining distance events; the women’s 800 and the men’s 1500.

Melanie Margalis had the fastest time of the morning in the women’s 200 IM. She touched the wall at 2:14.28. The men’s 200 IM should be fun to watch tonight. The top three qualifiers were Ryan Lochte, Tyler Clary, and Chase Kalisz. Lochte had the fastest time at 2:01.87, while Clary was second at 2:02.57 and Kalisz was third at 2:02.85.

ABSC’s own Hali Flickinger had the fastest morning swim in the women’s 200 backstroke with a 2:12.00. Kylie Stewart and Jordan Mattern were second and third at 2:13’s. Tyler Clary, the defending Olympic Champion in this event, earned the top seed with a 2:03.54. Ryan Lochte was entered in this event, but was a no show at the time of the race.

The women’s 100 free was won by Amanda Weir from SwimAtlanta. She posted a 55.02 to lead an impressive final heat. Other swimmers in the final include Megan Romano, Allison Schmitt, Shannon Vreeland, Jordan Mattern, and Maddison Kennedy; all of which have been or are on the US National team.

Michael Phelps had a strong morning swim to earn the top seed in the men’s 100 freestyle. He touched ahead of the field at 49.59, followed by Lochte (49.88), Conor Dwyer (50.08), and Yannick Agnel (50.28). Caeleb Dressel just missed the A-final, finishing 9th at 50.70.
