I think I have been hearing MP talking about his troubles with the turns since the 2 years before the London Olympics. And not just freestyle turns or sprint event turns, but turns in general.

I have theory on his turns, no proof just observation because I pay too much attention to Phelps than any one should. I think he simply can’t see the wall as well as he used too. I say that because I have noticed that while he still wears his glasses sometimes, it’s more than before. If he has depth perception problems (and given some of his car accidents I really do wonder) being underwater is going to make it worse. I have noticed that he doesn’t completely plant his feet on the wall and while his turns have always been his week spot it has gotten worse since Beijing. I think his comment about thinking he was closer to wall… Read more »

What are you people talking about, the goggles have nothing to do with it. His lack of experience in the free and trying to race a sprint when he has always been a mid-length swimmer combined with taking 2 years off is the problem. It’s just now that he is back down to fighting weight and when you consider that it wasn’t but 8 or 9 months ago when he decided to start training again to see what happens. I think Michael is doing just fine.

It wasnt 8 or 9 months ago that Phelps decided to come back.

If I recall correctly without having to scour the internet for old interviews, Bob said it was in November/December when Michael started showing up to practice regularly and it was around January that he decided to compete in Arizona just to see what happens. So it was 10 months ago now, he has only been back in competition (taking it seriously) for 4 months. I modify my statement, Michael is doing phenomenal. Of course that’s not how the general public will see it.

true. To be fair, though, free or back stroke counts are a tad more variable than fly or breast. Still, not good to miss the wall on your first race repping a new brand 😀

Clearly it is an equipment issue….. Nothing to do with the swimmer misjudging the turn at all. Aqua Sphere should just close up shop.
