Michael Phelps, Dierks Bentley, Dr. J and Ken Griffey Jr. To Play Annexus Pro-Am

According to the Waste Management Phoenix OpenMichael Phelps, the greatest Olympian of all-time, along with Country star Dierks Bentley, football star Jim McMahon, baseball star Ken Griffey Jr., NASCAR legend Michael Waltrip and basketball great Julius Erving are all scheduled to play the Waste Management Phoenix Open Annexus Pro-Am. They tee off Wednesday morning, January 30th on TPC Scottsdale’s Stadium Course.

Michael Phelps has retired from swimming, but his competitive nature has not died. Golf appears to be his go-to outlet. As reported by swimswam (August 11, 2012), Phelps has been filming The Haney Project with Hank Haney.  The Golf Channel will begin airing the episodes February 25th. WM Phoenix reports a Golf Channel film crew will be in tow as Phelps’ plays this week.

For those who don’t believe in Phelps’ talent on the links, perhaps you should revisit a report (and video) from October 5th, 2012, The Epic Putt

On day 2 of the 2012 Dunhill Links Pro Am Championship, Michael Phelps is really warming up. On the par 4 hole number 6, Phelps sunk what the European Tour estimated to be a 159 ft putt for an eagle. For those unfamiliar with the terminology, this is on a professional-grade golf course, and Phelps finished the whole in two fewer shots than what a player is expected to shoot.

This is one of the most amazing putts you will ever see, by a professional or an amateur. Very few golfers will ever even get the opportunity to make a putt that long – this is a particularly large green. After being disappointed with his performance on the first day, that putt put Phelps and his partner Paul Casey, a professional golfer, to 4 under already: a huge improvement off of day 1.
