Michael Phelps Becomes Most Decorated Olympian of All Time

US Olympian Michael Phelps passed Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina tonight with his medals in the 200m Butterfly (Silver) and 4×200 Freestyle Relay (Gold). His medals tonight bring Phelps’ total to 19 medals, one-upping Latynina’s total of 18. Phelps still has medal hopes for the 200 IM, and the 4×100 Medley relay, giving him a shot at a total of 22 career Olympic medals over three Olympic Games (three in which he has won medals).

The Michael Phelps Olympic Medal Table:

Gold 2004 Athens 100 m butterfly
Gold 2004 Athens 200 m butterfly
Gold 2004 Athens 200 m medley
Gold 2004 Athens 400 m medley
Gold 2004 Athens 4×200 m freestyle
Gold 2004 Athens 4×100 m medley
Gold 2008 Beijing 100 m butterfly

Gold 2008 Beijing 200 m medley
Gold 2008 Beijing 400 m medley
Gold 2008 Beijing 200 m freestyle
Gold 2008 Beijing 4×100 m freestyle
Gold 2008 Beijing 4×200 m freestyle
Gold 2008 Beijing 4×100 m medley
Gold 2012 London 4×200 m freestyle
Silver 2012 London 200 butterfly
Silver 2012 London 4×100 m freestyle
Bronze 2004 Athens 200 m freestyle
Bronze 2004 Athens 4×100 m freestyle

Michael Phelps has publicly stated that these Olympics will be his last and he will not compete in Rio in 2016. Phelps did, however, say in 2008 that he would never swim another 400 IM, the event that he came fourth in just a few days ago.

Aside from his impressive career medal total, these Olympics have, so far, been disappointing for Michael Phelps. He failed to medal in the 400 IM, collected only a silver in the 4x100m Freestyle relay (although split a very impressive time) after his team was run down. Phelps jammed his third turn in the 200m Fly, his pet event since he qualified for the 2000 Olympics in it at age 15, and was eventually out touched by South African Chad le Clos.

It is also interesting to note that Michael Phelps, for the time being, has more Olympic gold medals all time than Jamaica.

Michael is an amazing swimmer and spirit and he shall always be a swimming hero to me and to my children. Thank you Michael. You deserve to take a break from the pool and do someone great for yourself and others. Good luck in your next quest in life..

Relay three peated already happened in the past. Individual never

Kitajima won´t threepeat on 200 breast probably

The next two guys who could try threepeating now maybe Locthe (200 back) and Cielo (50 Free)

You mean if Lochte wins 200 bk here and 4 years from now? If Kitajima doesn’t win the 200 breast then I think Phelps will either get the honor in the 200im or 100 fly.

I just realized something; Phelps and Lochte have already three-peated in the 800 FR!

Phelps’ 100 free split on the 4×100 showed he has excellent speed. Only Agnel was faster. So I don’t see why he can’t win the 100 fly. The 200 IM – it is hard to be optimistic about that since Phelps is having difficulty at the end of the races > 100.

No one knows really where Czerniak and Cavic are standing right now..

100 fly is actually less safe than 200 were

His times, other than the 400 IM, have been a little faster than at last year’s World Championships. It’s conceivable that with similar improvements in 200 IM (especially with the 200 back before for Lochte) and 100 fly he can three-beat in them. I’m crossing all my fingers and toes!!!

I sure hope so….. The world has catched up. I know Lochte won’t beat Phelps in the 200 IM but dont know how the rest is doing in this event. have to wait for semis tomorrow to know for sure…. I think 100 fly he will win it.

I Think the only real threat to Phelps on 200IM are Lotche and Pereira.

Pereira has clearly improved, especially his breastroke, but he needs to improve quite a bit to get a 1:54 low. I think Lochte’s confidence is slightly diminished, especially for freestyle finishes, and he will be slightly tired. Phelps’ sprint speed seems to be present, and the 100 fly is essentially a sprint race. I guess I’m trying to convince myself, because I just want to see him three-peat so BADLY! LOL!

I am not sure.. considerind he focused for 200IM even he was not expecting his 400IM time.. when i said he went 1:57 flat and 4:12 untapered no one believed me..

I am seeing Phelps emerging as a leader, someone that is humble and gracious.Yea, he was pissed when he lost that 2fly but when he stood on the podium and gave Chad a pointer ( smiling) to hold his medal, he radiated great sportsmanship and generosity. He has been gracious to his teammates, honest in his appraisal and humble. Phelps has never been a showboat, that is what I liked about him. He swam, he is great and he has grown and matured. He almost seems more relaxed, I hope so.

Wow fastest relay split after that 200fly that had to have heard his head, heart and body? He’s a champ!

As much as I hurt for him having lost the 200fly, it doesn’t change anything for me. He’s still the greatest butteflier in history. And the list of medals speaks for it self, he’s the greatest I’ll ever see in my life time I’m sure of it. He’s done it all. To me he was already the most decorated Olympian of all time by virtue of his 14 (now 15) golds, but at least this puts the debate to rest!

Congrats Michael Phelps!! I’ve been watching since Athens in 04 and it has been beyond AMAZING.
