At the 2019 SEC Championships 2 weeks ago, LSU junior Matthew Klotz broke 2 American Deaf Records.
First, on a 200 free relay leadoff, Klotz swam a 19.55 50 freestyle. That was .02 seconds shy of the LSU school record, but broke his own Deaf Record of 19.77 from the mid-season Art Adamson Invitational. He now ranks 2nd in LSU school history.
Later, in the 100 back, Klotz swam a 47.17 in prelims (before adding time to a 47.30 in finals). That broke his own American Record in the 100 backstroke also set at the Art Adamson Invitational.
In his 3rd event, the 200 back, he swam a 1:43.69 in prelims before adding time in finals. That was just shy of his American Record of 1:43.55 set at last year’s SEC Championships.
Klotz was the 2018 International Committee for Sports for the Deaf Sportsman of the Year.
