Matt Whittle Verbally Commits to Cal

Breaststroker Matt Whittle has verbally committed to the Cal Golden Bears. He comes to Berkeley from nearby Davis, California where he trained with the Davis Aquadarts and coach Billy Doughty, who Whittle credits with getting him to the level that he’s at now.

Whittle is a plus-sprinter, with yards bests of 21.58/46.10 in the 50 and 100 freestyles, plus a 48.2 in the 100 yard fly, but his best races are the breaststrokes. He’s been  55.29 and 1:59.09 in the 100 and 200 yard races so far in his career.

He rolls that all in to a very good 200 IM of 1:48.69.

The Cal breaststroke group can really use some stability, and they’ll hope that Whittle might bring that. Josh Prenot is a great 200 breaststroker, but drops off into the 100 and the 50. That has left Cal without a perfect option for their medley relays this season, with Prenot and senior Ryan Studebaker battling it out for those legs. We haven’t seen Christian Higgins yet for the Bears this season.
