Although we’re waiting on official start lists for this week’s South African Short Course Championships, we know that close to 300 swimmers will be descending upon the GC Jolliffee Pool beginning tomorrow. Spanning through Sunday, September 19th, the elite event is being hosted by the city of Pietermaritzburg, with potential FINA Short Course World Championships roster spots on the line.
Young gun Matt Sates is among the athletes set to compete, with the University of Georgia set to take on a monster schedule of 12 events.
The 18-year-old is coming off of his Olympic debut, where he raced in the men’s 100m bitterly and 200m IM. In the former he posted a time of 52.34 to place 32nd while he hit 1:58.08 in the prelims, followed by 1:58.75 in the semi-finals, to ultimately place 14th in Tokyo.
Sates earned 8 gold medals at the 2020 edition of these Championships and his packed schedule may very well set the future Bulldog up to do even more damage this time around.
Another Olympian in Rebecca Meder is scheduled to race this week. Meder was also a 2020 Olympian, placing 23rd in the women’s 200m IM.
Superstar Chad Le Clos is competing currently in the International Swimming League (ISL) season 3 as a member of Team Energy Standard, while Tatjana Schoenmaker‘s attendance is unknown at this time.
