Matheus Santana Lowers The 100m Freestyle Junior World Record

After breaking Caeleb Dressells junior world record at Maria Lenk Trophy with a 48.85 in prelims and then a 48.61 in finals, Matheus Santana lowered the junior world record again today, swimming a time of 48.35. Santana is swimming at the Brazilian Winter Junior/Senior Championships.

When Santana swam his 48.61, he split 23.89-24.72. That back half split was faster than everyone else in the field, including Cesar Cielo. Today, he dipped under 25 again on the back half, splitting 23.51-24.84.

This is his third time breaking the record and with the Olympics coming to his home country, Santana will have plenty of eyes looking his way. He has the potential to add to the freestyle relays in 2016 if he continues to develop.

I’ll ask again before this thread goes out of the homepage: isn’t there a video of this race? Thanks.

LUIGI:
Sadly, you will never see Santana 48.35 WJR(The old 48.61 in Maria Lenk Trophy Braden already posted here).I watched live on CBDA TV, but they dont record the race(ANY RACE) because of storage costs(or something like that).

2016 gold all hinges on whether or not the 47.10 Magnussen returns. No one else has shown they are capable of pushing that time and I’d be amazed if anyone else beat 47.10 by 2016.

AMAZING PERFORMANCE!
Is it too early to talk about gold medal in 2016?
It would be a great story at home.

It’s quite a reasonable.prediction. And I think it is a quite safe bet Santana will feature in the 2016 men 100 free final lineup, health permitting along the way). As for questions whether he will be resdy or not

Santana will be 20 by 2016 Rio.

Magnussen broke textile WR and became world champion at 20.

Florent Manaudou broke textile WR and became olympic champion at 21. Cielo became olympic champion at 21, and Athony Earvin became olympic champion at 19.
Granted, 50 free is more unpredictable and much more prone to an upset and it is probably harder for a young new comer to suddenly win 100 free .gold at worlds/olympics, But there are models: of all recent… Read more »
