Croatian backstroker Matea Samardzić lowered her own Croatian national record in the 200 backstroke at the U.S. Open on Thursday, winning the women’s event in 2:08.77 by 1/100 over Texas A&M’s Lisa Bratton. Samardzić broke the national mark three times last year; first with 2:09.73 at the National Championships in her native Croatia in February 2016, then with 2:09.24 at the European Championships, where she won the bronze medal, and finally with 2:09.11 at Southern Zone South Sectional Championship in Orlando in July 2016.
Samardzić’s U.S. Open performance marks her first foray into the sub-2:09 territory, and moves her to #14 in the world for the year.
