Maryland High School State Championships Postponed

The Maryland High School State Swimming Championships have been postponed and moved from the University of Maryland’s Eppley Natatorium.

Due to inclement weather, the Class 3A/2A/1A (small school) meet will be held on Friday, February 27th, at 4PM. Meanwhile the Class 4A/3A meet will be swum the next Tuesday, March 3rd, at 4PM.

Swimming the last meet mid-week should allow Maryland swimmers to avoid a conflict with the Potomac Valley Swimming LSC Championships (at the USA Swimming, club level) that begin the next weekend, however it will now overlap with the Maryland LSC Senior Championships that are scheduled from February 26th-March 1st.

Both meets have also been moved to the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.

The diving championships completed as scheduled on Friday.

This has created problems for many swimmers trying to balance high school swimming and club commitments. Hopefully there can be a better resolution than making athletes choose one or the other.

This meet is kind of superfluous in my opinion and it would be a no-brainer if I was one of these kids. Most of the best MD teams, especially those anywhere close to DC, target Metros as the championship meet to compete in. In addition this meet doesn’t allow private schools in MD to compete (leaving out swimmers from schools like Prep, GC, DeMatha, Stone Ridge, etc). Kind of a hollow championship…
