Rising Canadian star Mary-Sophie Harvey has had a fantastic start to the 2017 Canadian Swim Trials in Victoria. Not only did she punch herself a ticket to Budapest individually in the 200 free, but she got things started in the prelims with the 100th Quebec Provincial Record of her career.

Harvey clocked 1:59.44 in the 200 free for the record, and improved the record by over a second and a half in finals down to 1:57.81. These swims took down her old mark of 1:59.48 set at the Junior Pan Pacs in Maui back in August. She currently holds six of the 15-17 LC Age Group Records in Quebec (100 free, 200 free, 400 free, 200 breast, 200 IM, 400 IM).
Combined short course and long course, she currently holds 51 individual Provincial Records across three different age categories (12 and under, 13-14, 15-17).
She has been dominant throughout her age group career, and that success is beginning to translate to the national stage. Harvey is an all-around talent, who put many on notice with a Canadian National Record of 4:26.42 in the SCM 400 IM at the Ontario Junior International meet in December. Had she competed at the SC World Championships, which took place just a few weeks prior, that time would’ve been good for a silver medal. She also broke the national record in the 400 free at that same meet, clocking 4:02.23.
Her talents range so wide she is forced to scratch events she has a legitimate shot at qualifying for the national team in. Harvey scratched the 200 breast in favor of the 200 free on day 1 of Trials, despite being the #3 seed and holding a best time less than seven tenths off the ‘A’ standard in the 2 breast.
Harvey has three more swims left in Victoria: the 400 free, 400 IM and 200 IM. She holds the top seed in all three. Her best 400 IM LC was done in January at the Austin Pro Series in 4:37.89. That was likely an unrested swim, so it will be exciting to see what she can put together in that race.
The 400 IM is Friday, 400 free Saturday and the 200 IM on Sunday.
