Mary Pelton Verbally Commits to UCLA Bruins

The 3rd of 4 swimmers from the famous Pelton swimming clan has made her college decision. Mary Pelton announced on Twitter this morning that she will swim for the UCLA Bruins.

The NBAC product will follow in the footsteps of older sister Liz, currently a junior at Cal, and older brother Greg, who swam at Harvard, in the Division I swimming legacy.

“I loved everything about (UCLA),” Pelton said of her decision. “The team, the school, LA. It’s everything I was looking for and more.”

In yards, her best times are:

  • 50 free – 23.13
  • 100 free – 50.35
  • 200 free – 1:46.59
  • 100 back – 55.60
  • 200 IM – 2:00.19

While still a very good backstroker and IM’er like her older siblings, Mary Pelton is primarily a freestyle specialist. That’s a positive for UCLA: a team that is stacked with backstrokers, but that needs help in the free relays. Of the four swimmers the team had under 50 seconds last season in the 100 free, three will be graduated by the time Pelton arrives. That means she’ll pair with 2014-2015 sophomore Linnea Mack (22.34/49.13/1:48.19) to lead the UCLA relays into the future.

She should also be an individual scorer at Pac-12’s as a freshman and should be an NCAA qualifier as well.

Glad to have her in the Pac 12 where she’ll be swimming against her sister for her freshman year. Looks like currently her 200 free time is currently the closest to putting her into NCAA scoring contention so far.
