Martinenghi and Pilato Rattle 50 BR Italian Records on Night 2 of Italian Nats

2019 ITALIAN WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS

Night two of the 2019 Italian Winter Championships was highlighted by the nation’s young breaststrokers both coming close to national records in the 50 breast.

On the women’s side, 14-year-old Benedetta Pilato came close to breaking 30 seconds, hitting a 30.08 with Martina Carraro (30.52) and Arianna Castiglioni (30.77) trailing. Pilato was exactly one-tenth behind her 29.98 national record set this past summer at the 2019 World Championships in Gwangju. For the men, Nicolo Martinenghi took the 50 breast title in 26.97 to edge national record-holder Fabio Scozzoli (27.34). Scozzoli’s NR is a 26.70, but Martinenghi has been impressive since his 2018 was marred by a groin injury; last night, he broke 59 seconds in the 100 breast to hit a 58.75, breaking his own NR.

In the men’s 100 free, the top five finishers went under 49 seconds, led by Alessandro Miressi at 48.22. He was followed closely by Ivano Vendrame (48.38) and Santo Condorelli (48.55), with Luca Dotto in fourth (48.91) and Lorenzo Zazzeri in fifth (48.92). Miressi wasn’t all that far off of his own NR of 47.92.

Simone Sabbioni and Federico Burdisso both came within striking distance of their own NRs in their respective events. For Sabbioni, he led the 100 back charge, going 53.87, roughly half a second from his NR of 53.34. Burdisso posted a 1:55.15, winning by nearly three seconds, to come within a second of his NR of 1:54.39.

Federica Pellegrini was able to break 54 seconds in the 100 free, winning it in 53.95. The veteran racer holds the NR at 53.18.
