Russian backstroker Maria Kameneva took down a national record that’d been on the books for a week shy of an entire decade, as she popped a 56.10 to earn a silver medal in the finals of the 100 backstroke during today’s session of the 2019 European Short Course Championships.
Kamenva, who earned bronze in the same event two years ago, shaved 0.26s off the previous national record of 56.36, set by Kseniya Moskvina in December 2009 at the European Championships, just at the end of the supersuit era. Moskvina’s swim there earned a gold medal, and also set a European record, a mark now held by Katinka Hosszu.
This appears to Kameneva’s first individual medal at meet of this level, although she does have two medal from mixed relays at the 2018 Short Course World Championships.
