Maria Kameneva Breaks Second Russian Record of Euros With 57.59 IM

2019 LEN EUROPEAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

It’s been a banner week for Maria Kamenevawho now has two Short Course Euros silvers and two Russian records in Glasgow.

The 20-year-old rising Russian star finished second in the 100 IM Friday, going 57.59 to lower her own Russian record and become the first in her nation’s history to break 58. Kameneva had previously set the record at 58.14 at the Russian Championships in November, but shaved another half-second off that mark in the Euros final. She finished second there to now three-time defending champ Katinka Hosszu (57.36).

A look at Kameneva’s splits:

  • 2019 Russian Nationals (November): 26.18/31.96
  • 2019 European Championships (December): 26.04/31.55 = 57.59

Still growing into the event, the 1999-born Kameneva went out about a tenth faster at Euros, but also managed to bring the race home another four tenths faster.

She moves into a tie as the #4 performer of all-time in the event:

  3. Alicia Coutts (AUS) – 57.53
  4. Siobhan-Marie O’Connor (GBR) / Maria Kameneva (RUS) – 57.59
