Luke Hobson Posts 1:49 in 200 Freestyle During Night 2 of Des Moines Spring Cup

Several swimmers earned their first Olympic Trials cuts on night 2 of the TYR 18&Under Spring Cup, while Luke Hobson and Lucy Thomas climbed the all-time rankings in their age groups. 

17-year-old Luke Hobson swam a huge personal best to win the 200 freestyle, dropping over 3 seconds to finish in a time of 1:49.44. With his performance, Hobson dipped under the Wave II Olympic Trials cut of 1:49.65, also moving to 30th all-time in 17-18 age group history. 

15-year-old Lucy Thomas also earned her first wave II cut, swimming a time of 1:09.04 in the 100 breaststroke. With her performance, Thomas moves to 17th all time in 15-16 age group history, ahead of current world record holder Lily King. 

A slew of other girls also got under the Wave I cut, including 18-year-old Meredith Smithbaker, who cut 2 seconds off of her best to finish in 1:10.47, earning her first Olympic Trials cut. 

18-year-old Malia Rausch kicked off the session by earning her 4th Wave I Olympic Trials Cut, winning the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:00.87. With her swim, Rausch dropped over a second off of her best time. 

Rausch closed the session by finishing 2nd in the 400 IM, earning another new Wave I cut. Rausch touched in a time of 4:49.63 to cut over 13 seconds off of her best time of 5:02.71 from 2019. Just ahead of her, 16-year-old Kathryn McCarthy earned her first Olympic Trials cut, finishing in 4:49.13 to drop over 11 seconds off of her best time in the event.

After swimming under the Olympic Trials cut during prelims, 18-year-old Daniel Matheson won the men’s 400 IM in a time of 4:24.44. During prelims, Matheson swam a time of 4:24.44 to earn the Wave I cut of 4:25.99. 

Other Event Winners:

  • 18-year-old Adam Fusti-Molnar won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:02.19, cutting .3 off of his best.
  • 16-year-old Scarlet Martin won the women’s 100 butterfly in a time of 1:00.74, dropping .1. 
  • 17-year-old William Modglin won the men’s 100 butterfly, touching in 54.40 to come within .1 of his best time.
