Loyola University Maryland Sweeps H2ounds Invitational With 19 Wins On Saturday

BALTIMORE – Lily Mead broke her own Loyola University Maryland record in the 200-meter backstroke, and the men set three new pool record relay marks as both Greyhounds programs finished first in the team standings at the conclusion of this weekend’s two-day H2ounds Invitational.

Loyola won 19 of 28 events overall during the two sessions on Saturday. The men’s 1,244 overall points were 501 above Marist in second place, while the women (1127,5 points) were 261.5 points ahead of the Red Foxes.

Mead and Max Verheyen were named the Female and Male Swimmers of the Meet following the third session.

Caleb KellyReid HusseyConor Rutigliano and Jimmy Hayburn began the morning session with a pool-record time of 1:20.82 to win the 200 freestyle relay. Kelly’s opening 50 free split of 20.24 was a season-best which ranks second in the Patriot League. Mead, Fay MoserCharley Tulio and Amanda Cradock won the women’s race in 1:34.74, with Mead’s 22.99 split No. 3 in the Patriot League this fall.

Loyola then swept the 400 individual medley and 100 butterfly races. Verheyen posted a conference-leading time of 3:52.37 in the 400 IM, while Matt Voight (4:04.19) followed in third.

The Greyhound men took the top five spots in the 100 fly, with Rutigliano (49.01), Hussey (49.07) and Jonathan Brooks (49.08) leading the way. Rutligiano’s mark ranks fifth in the conference. Verheyen (55.07) and Michael Gozdan (56.27) would later beat out the rest of the field in the 100 breaststroke.

Elena Mugno (1st, 4:35.94) and Lauren Joyce (3rd, 4:40.73) paced the women in the 400 IM, while Laura Latham (56.64) and Izzy Barnette finished 1-2 in the 100 fly.

Mead added another event victory in the 100 breast, touching the wall in a conference-leading time of 1:02.48. Abby Andrews (1:06.18) followed in third. Alison Prushinski (57.53) and Stella Meyerhoeffer (57.88), meanwhile, claimed the top two spots in the 100 backstroke.

Other top finishers for the women in the morning session included Haley Cisewski (3rd, 1:54.81) in the 200 free and Kylie Preihs (5th, 18:09.18) in the 1650 free. For the men, other top finishers were Rutigliano (2nd, 49.30) and Patrick Hayburn (3rd, 49.78) in the 100 back, Alex Plavoukos (2nd, 15:58.01) in the 1650 free and Zach Reid (3rd, 1:40.39) in the 200 free. Rutigliano’s season-best time is second among Patriot League swimmers.

Top divers on Day 2 were Mya Sharkey (3rd, 207.10) in the women’s 1-meter and Dan Faunce (5th, 196.80) in the men’s 3-meter.

The third and final session began with the 200 medley relays, which were swept by Loyola’s ‘A’ teams. Mead, Andrews, Barnette and Tulio won the women’s race in 1:44.48, while Rutigliano (22.58 50 back – 2nd in Patriot League), Verheyen, Jimmy Hayburn and Kelly posted a pool-record time of 1:28.40.

The Greyhounds also swept the 200 back races. Mead’s Loyola and pool record mark of 1:57.50 leads the Patriot League this season; Henry Mueller (1st, 1:46.62) and Brooks (3rd, 1:49.91) cracked the top three for the men.

The Loyola men would win all six contested races in the final session. Zach Eisenmann (2:02.76), Gozdan (2:03.64) and Josh Walker (2:05.43) were 1-2-3 in the 200 breast, while Hussey (1:47.78) and Harry Hearn (1:49.73) placed first and second in the 200 fly.  Hussey’s mark ranks fifth in the conference this season.

Mueller, Kelly, Verheyen and Jimmy Hayburn ended the day with a pool record time of 2:59.40 in the 400 free relay. The previous pool mark of 3:00.94, set by Rider, had stood since 2009.

Andrews touched the wall third with a time of 2:26.60 to lead the women in the 200 breast. Molly Davis (2:04.75), Latham (2:07.10) and Andress (2:07.34) swept the top three spots in the 200 fly to wrap up the individual races.

Mead, Barnette, Tulio and Avery Stimmel claimed the women’s ninth and final victory of the afternoon after completing the 400 free relay in 3:30.57.

This marked the end of the fall schedule for the swimming and diving programs. The Greyhounds return to Mangione Pool for a 12 p.m. dual against Bucknell on Friday, Jan. 14.
