Loyola Sweeps Mount St. Mary’s on Senior Day

BALTIMORE – The Loyola University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams celebrated Senior Day by sweeping both meets from visiting Mount St. Mary’s on Saturday afternoon.

The men’s team beat The Mount by a 159-111 margin while the women’s team handed The Mount a 149-89 loss.

In pre-meet ceremonies, the Greyhounds men’s team honored a pair of seniors, John Callaghan and Ross Caudle, and the women’s team honored eight seniors, including Gabrielle Clarkson, Christina Guertin, Grace Huckenpoehler, Amy Martinelli, Christina Napoli, Aly Pacitti, Brooke Sharkey and Lindsey Staszewski.

In the men’s meet, freshman Jimmy Hayburn was a double-winner as he took first place in the 50 (24.48) and the 100 backstrokes (54.74). Sophomore Conor Rutigliano was second in the 50 backstroke (24.57), while Reid Hussey was third (24.59). In the 100 backstroke, freshman Nick Pacitti was runner-up (57.81) and Antony Parrinello was third (1:01.25).

Freshman Alejandro Basalo contributed a first-place finish in the 1000 free with a time of 10:04.64. Sophomores Colin Anderson and Mark Boran finished one-two in the 200 free; Anderson was first with a time of 1:43.80 while Boran took second (1:44.65).

One of the honored seniors, Callaghan finished first in the 50 breaststroke (26.37). Brian Hess took third place (26.82).

Richard Kogut led Loyola sweep in the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.49. Xander Chan was runner-up (52.23) and Nick Pacitti was third (56.41).

Later in the meet, Chan came back to win the 100 free (48.47). Adam Jasiak took third with a time of 50.72.

Sophomore Austin Lee took first place in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.83), ahead of Ben Amoreno (1:04.02).

Freshman Jonathan Brooks took first place in the 50 free (21.99) while Caudill was second (22.67).

Competing as an exhibition performer, freshman Sung Lee posted times of 4:42.80 in the 500 free and 52.56 in the 100 I.M.

Freshman diver Jeremy Unanue won the 1-meter diving event with 146.62 points and scored 171.57 points in the 3-meter dive as an exhibition performer.

The Greyhounds’ 200 medley relay team of Lee, Callaghan, Rutigliano and Anderson took first place with a time of 1:33.68 to open the meet. In the 200 free relay, Chan, Patrick Clisham, Pacitti and Anderson posted a time of 1:28.28.

In the women’s race, the Greyhounds took a big lead in the 200 medley relay as their teams took the first two spots.

Emily Koegl, Devin Cronin, Huckenpoehler and Dickey finished first with a time of 1:48.64. The Greyhounds’ “B” team of Faith Tyranski, Emma Schouten, Sophie Jahan, and Aly Pacitti was second (1:51.67).

In the 1000 free, freshman Allison Wade took second place with a time of 11:14.48. Guerin was third with a time of 11:18.40.

Elizabeth Romano won the 200 free with a time of 2:01.92 while Jennifer DeGroat was third (2:04.80).

In the 50 backstroke, freshman Taylor Ament took first place (28.61) as the Greyhounds too the top three spots. Freshman Maggie Manchester was second (29.81) while Emily O’Halloran was third (31.88).

Ament also won the 100 free with a time with 57.08. Emily Moyher was second (58.09).

Tyranski posted a win in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.21. Romano placed third (1:07.08).

In the 100 breaststroke, Maggie McCann was second (1:15.96) and DeGroat was third (1:17.05).

Competing as an exhibition entry, Davis had a time of 5:30.26. Walsh posted a time of 26.71 in the 50 butterfly.

In the 1-meter diving, Elizabeth Berta scored 160.34 points.

Walsh had a time of 59.69 in the 100 I.M.

Tyranski, Hayburn, Jahan and Dickey teamed up to post a time of 1:41.59 in the 200 free relay.

The Greyhounds will now take some time off to prepare for the Patriot League Championship Meet which runs from February 20-23 at Bucknell University.

Mary Lombardi and Jordan Friedman each posted a pair of top-two individual finishes to pace the Mount St. Mary’s women’s swimming & diving team in a dual meet at Loyola on Saturday. The Mountaineers fell to the Greyhounds by a 159-111 margin in the team’s final tune-up before postseason competition.

Lombardi won the 1000 free with a time of 10:56.51, and raced to a second-place finish in the 100 back in 1:05.42. Friedman claimed victory in the 100 breast in 1:15.14, and touched the wall in 2:02.09 in the 200 free to take second place.

The Mountaineers also won three other individual events on the afternoon. Valeria Villagran raced to a victory in the 50 fly (26.50), Lauren Gullickson took the top spot in the 100 IM (1:04.99), and Elizabeth Fahrney claimed the top spot in the 500 free (5:38.94).

In the 1-meter diving event, Laci Vickery posted the team’s top score with a 158.62 to earn a second-place showing, while Laura Kingham (153.15) and Catherine Davis (130.88) finished third and fourth, respectively.

In relay action, the Mounts squad of Villagran, Maggie deTar, Friedman and Lombardi took the top spot in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:44.41. In the 200 medley relay, Eliza Felos, Gullickson, Villagran and deTar combined for a time of 1:54.07 to place fourth.

The Mount heads to the Northeast Conference Championships spanning February 13-16 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, New York.

The Mount St. Mary’s men’s swimming & diving team was topped by Loyola, 149-89, on Saturday at Mangione Pool in the team’s final action before postseason competition.

The Mountaineers won three events on the afternoon, highlighted by a victory in the 50 fly from Ryan Carroll in a time of 23.21. Peter Jones posted the team’s other win in individual events, taking the top spot in the 100 IM with a time of 53.86.

In the 200 free relay, the Mount’s top team of Will Twizell, Andrew Jones, Brock Cudahy and Carroll combined for a time of 1:28.60 to earn a first-place finish.

The Mountaineers also tallied four second-place finishes in individual events at the meet. John Wilson posted a pair of second-place showings in the 50 breast (26.68) and 100 IM (54.43). Nicholas Starvaggi placed second in the 1000 free (10:39.40), and Andrew Jones took second in the 100 free (49.29).

In the 200 medley relay, Jonathan Mata, Twizell, Carroll and Peter Jones raced to second place with a time of 1:34.26.

The Mountaineers will be in postseason competition at the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association Championships on February 20-23 at the Liberty Natatorium on the campus of Liberty University.
