Longhorns Bring Back Ganiel, Add Ten Freshmen, One Transfer for 2017

According to the the Texas Longhorns updated men’s swimming and diving roster, NCAA-qualifier Imri Ganiel is indeed back on the team.  He took the 2015-2016 season to train in his native country of Israel and complete some of his compulsory military service.  Ganiel represented Israel in the 2012 London Games, but did not end up swimming in Rio.

Ganiel gives Texas some breaststroke depth that was relatively lacking last year, although that didn’t stop the Longhorns from steamrolling their way to a NCAA championship.  While senior Will Licon won the 200 breast for the second consecutive year, the Longhorns didn’t have another swimmer entered in either breaststroke event.  Ganiel qualified for the NCAA championships in both years he’s competed for the Longhorns so far.  In 2014, he finished 24th in the 200 breast and 32nd in the 100 breast, and also swam on the Longhorns 3rd-place 400 medley relay team.  In 2015, he was actually left off the championship roster despite qualifying, as Texas had more qualifiers than they could take.

Ganiel is listed on the roster as a junior, although it is not clear how many more years of NCAA eligibility he will have.  His roster profile lists his freshman year as 2012-2013, despite him not competing that year, and the 2013-2014 campaign as his “redshirt freshman” year.

The Longhorns’ roster update also reveals nine new freshmen who will be swimming under coach Eddie Reese this year, along with one new diver.  We already knew about several of them from announcing their commitments, but we never saw a press release from Texas naming all their incoming freshmen.

Longhorn freshmen:
Josh Artmann
Grayson Campbell
Thomas Colket
Jacob Cornish
Jacob Huerta
Sam Kline
Jack Lanphear
Reed Merritt
Braxton Moore
Preston Varozza

Finally, Sam Stewart does appear on the roster, confirming that he has transferred from Auburn.  He’ll be competing for the Longhorns as a sophomore this year, after swimming the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 back at last year’s NCAA championships.

All their money is tied up in their top swimmers right now.

I have a feeling Tom Colket isn’t a freshman but rather a senior transfer from SMU. I think he swam with Jack Conger growing up.

Divers and bunch of talented 6’3” – 6’4” kids from Texas that Eddie will coach up to NCAAs. I have watched Josh Artmann dominate backstroke in all ages from when he was 9 year old. He will be good one.

Josh grew up in Nitro, but spent last 2-3 years in the Austin Swim Club. it helps when Brendan Hansen recommends you to Eddie.

Actually Josh was a top ten age grouper, 10-Un backstroke, at Cedar Park Swimming coached by Tim Crosson before moving to nitro. Nitro rarely creates anything of their own.

One of those freshman, Grayson Cambell, is already an elite diver who will score points in 1m and 3m. Team him with Mark Anderson, who scored on all three boards last year, and Sean O’Brien, who dove Nc’s last year, and you are looking at Texas getting 60 to 70 points on the boards.

Given their current roster I doubt they have much in the way of scholarship dollars. And they don’t really need anybody new anyway
