Long Island University (LIU) has received a verbal commitment from Amaya Henry to join the team in the fall of 2020. Henry is from Wesley Chapel, Florida where she attends Land O’ Lakes High School and swims for Tampa Elite Aquatics.
Henry is primarily a freestyle swimmer, specializing in the shorter distances. Last November, at the FHSAA (Florida High School) 3A District 5 Championships she swam to best times in both the 50 free (25.32) and 100 free (55.30). She has seen rapid improvement in the long course 50 free over the last three years. In 2017 her best time in the event was 29.72. Since then she has lowered her time nearly a full second, swimming a 28.87 last summer.

The LIU Sharks finished 5th at this year’s NEC Conference Championships. They were led by junior Amanda Peren in the freestyle events. Peren was the conference champion in both the 100 and 200 free, as well as the 200 IM. Her swims in the 200 free (1:47.26) and 200 IM (2:00.30) were both conference records. Due to her performances she was honored with the NEC Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet award. This marks the first time that an LIU swimmer has ever earned this honor. Henry will get one year of training with Peren after arriving on campus this fall.
The 2019-2020 season was the first year after the merger of the athletics teams from LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn merged into a single athletics program.
