Lochte: “It’s time for me to start doing my job again” (Video)

Reported by Anne Lepesant.

MEN 200 LC METER IM

  • American: 1:54.00 7/28/2011 Ryan Lochte
  • U.S. Open: 1:54.56 7/10/2009 Ryan Lochte
  • U.S. Open Meet: 1:59.26 11/30/2006 Michael F Phelps
  1. GOLD- Ryan Lochte, Trojan Swim Club 1:59.24
  2. SILVER- Xavier Mohammed, Swim Wales 2:00.47
  3. BRONZE- Sam Stewart, Longhorn Aquatics 2:01.51

The field was bunched at the fly wall, but Texas A&M’s Brock Bonetti turned just ahead of Trojan Swim Club’s Ryan Lochte. Lochte had a smooth backstroke leg and pulled ahead of the field, although Swim Wales’ Xavier Mohammedstayed with him. The pair had the clear lead heading into the breaststroke, where Lochte broke away and led by about 3/4 of a body heading into the freestyle. Lochte increased his lead over the final 50 meters and touched in a new U.S. Open meet record of 1:59.24, taking 2/100 off Michael Phelps’ 2006 meet mark.

Mohammed finished second with 2:00.47. Third place went to Sam Stewart of Longhorn Aquatics in 2:01.51.

I have to say I’m a little disappointed by his comments post race and the lack of training he claims.
We all kept hearing about this new fire that’s been fueling him…so to come out and perform like this after speaking about all of this new motivation is perplexing.
The justification is also not valid in my opinion. Grevers wife also had a baby and he claimed he wasn’t getting as much sleep as he’d wanted, but that he was still training regularly (obvious by his great showing at worlds). The fact that Lochte doesn’t think he can train for AT LEAST 2 hours a day because he has to be there for his family is a bit… Read more »

If you bring up Grevers, we should bring up Vollmer too. She actually carried and birthed a child leading up to Rio and still trained and made the team. Lochte has no excuse. To me, only swimming once or twice a week and then showing up to a national level meet indicates that he’s not very motivated. Having a meet coming up should motivate you to get in at least a little bit more than that. (Heck, I’m a masters swimmer with a full time job and I get myself to the pool 4 times a week when I have a meet approaching.) I think he’s done but hasn’t accepted it yet. He’s a great athlete though, so I would… Read more »

He didn’t have such a bad swim after his break also if he gets back into his shape from only one year ago swimming a 1:56.22 with a torn groin he has a pretty solid shot

I thought his job was reality TV. Better money and you don’t have to work so hard.

People voted me down for commenting this the other day, but IMO his motivation and willingness to put himself through the pain necessary to swim at a WC or Olympic level is suspect. By his own admission he wasn’t really committed to his training over the last quad and the results showed in Rio; although, I’m not sure how much the groin pull injury he had during Trials affected the end result as wel. To say he was only able to train 1-2 times a week because he was waiting for his child to be born is an excuse, if you ask me. The rest of us have to work 40-50 hrs a week while our spouses are pregnant. Will… Read more »

He was completely brutalized and shamed in the press (and on these boards) in the worst way, whether you think it was deserved or not. If it had happened today, it would have been on the sports page, not the front page day after day. No one would weather that without some isolation, depression (which he’s publicly admitted), or at least lack of motivation. I think you should cut him a little slack for that. He was 1 or 2 in the world in the 200 IM every year 2013-2015 leading up to Rio, and ranked 3rd in the World in 2016, and he did that despite having an MCL tear and ACL sprain in his knee in 2013. So… Read more »

Maybe you should watch this video: https://swimswam.com/can-ryan-lochte-qualify-national-team-video-feature/
In the video Ryan tells Coleman that after 2012, NOT 2016, 2012, he lost the passion for swimming and was just sticking around to try to make the Olympic Team. So I’M not saying Ryan wasn’t really committed to his training his hardest leading into Rio, RYAN is saying that! The reasons that he was ranked so well in the 200 IM over that quad are that same reasons Phelps was ranked so well in many events between 2009 and 2012: talent, an aerobic base built up over man years, and muscle memory. Perhaps you didn’t read my comments that I’m rooting for him to succeed and the US… Read more »

Pretty good time, for a visibly out of shape Lochte, always fun to watch him swim and going to be interesting to see what kind of form he can get back into !
