BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men’s swimming and diving team picked up a hard-fought victory over visiting Loyola on Saturday, topping the Greyhounds 147.50-146.50 in Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks won eight of the 16 events to improve to 7-0 all-time vs. the Patriot League foe, led by senior Walker Wilson‘s three individual wins and a relay victory.

Wilson finished in first in the 200 freestyle (1:41.05), 200 backstroke (1:51.80) and 500 freestyle (4:39.61). He was also part of the 200 free relay team, along with sophomore Glenn Lasco, freshman Caleb Eberly and junior Greg Giannella, that finished first in 1:23.98.

Also picking up a victory on Saturday was sophomore Owen Thomas in the 100 backstroke (51.56), an event that saw Lasco finish second (51.76). Lasco was first to finish in the 100 free (46.30) as well.

In diving, sophomore Addison Cochran won the 1-meter (250.94) with junior Tyler Keller not far behind in second (249.37). Meanwhile Keller captured the 3-meter (325.65) with Cochran in second (250.35).

Now 4-1 on the year, Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 when they host Lafayette at 6 p.m.

The Lehigh women’s swimming and diving team topped Patriot League foe Loyola on Saturday in impressive fashion, beating the Greyhounds 185-113 at Jacobs Pool. The Mountain Hawks took first in 11-of-16 events, including a pair of first-place finishes from four individuals – senior Payton Miles, junior Megan Fennell and freshmen Danielle Prekop and Sarah Hardy. Miles was also on the 200 free relay team that captured first.

One week after winning her first collegiate race at Rider, the 500 free, Prekop captured first in both the 1,000 free (10:35.24) and 500 free (5:11.63). The Mountain Hawks finished top three in the 500 free, with seniors Tori Connolly (5:12.73) and Samantha Gallego (5:13.95) following closely behind Prekop.

Miles came in first in the 50 free (23.59) and 100 free (51.36). The top three finishers in the 100 free were all from Lehigh, with Miles followed by Foley (52.46) and Judge (52.87). Meanwhile, Miles’ 200 free relay team, also consisting of juniors Ann Foley, Olivia Giampietro and Evie Gieseman, took first in 1:36.04. Hardy also placed first in two events, the 200 butterfly (2:05.95) and 400 IM (4:31.84).

Others who won individual events on Saturday included freshman Megan Judge in the 200 free (1:53.65) and freshman Sophia Poeta in the 200 backstroke (2:06.14). The 200 free was another event that saw the Mountain Hawks finish 1-2-3, with Judge followed by Foley (1:55.02) and Gallego (1:56.40).

Fennell enjoyed a strong day diving as well, taking first in both the 1-meter (272.54) and 3-meter (278.10).

Now 5-0 on the year and 7-0 all-time vs. the Greyhounds, the Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday, Nov. 22 when they host Lafayette at 6 p.m.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Max Verheyen won three individual races and senior Emily Koegl set a Jacobs Pool record in the 100-yard butterfly, but the Loyola University Maryland swimming and diving teams each dropped decisions to host Lehigh University on Saturday afternoon.

In the men’s competition, the Mountain Hawks pulled out a tight 147-146 victory over Loyola. The Lehigh women’s team topped the Greyhounds by a 185-113 scoreline.

Koegl, Elizabeth Walsh, Devin Cronin and Megan Dickey added a second pool record for the Loyola women in the 400 medley relay, completing the race in a time of 3:50.93.

The lead in the men’s competition went back and forth all afternoon until the Lehigh 200 freestyle relay team won the final event of the meet. The Greyhounds owned the lead after two legs before Lehigh came from behind to win by 0.70 seconds. Loyola’s relay team, comprised of Sung Lee, Colin Anderson, Jimmy Hayburn and Reid Hussey finished with a time of 1:24.68.

Verheyen helped the Greyhounds build an early lead as he finished first in the 1000 free (9:40.46), the 200 breaststroke (2:08.41) and the 400 individual medley (4:04.07).

The men’s team opened the meet with a strong showing in the 400 medley relay, taking the top two spots. Conor Rutigliano, Jay Venit, Lee and Hayburn finished first with a time of 3:26.80. Jonathan Brooks, David Sears, Zac Metzler and Anderson were second with a time of 3:28.50.

Hayburn finished first in the 50 free (21.37) and was second in the 100 free (47.16). Anderson was fourth in the 50 free (22.00) and the 100 free (48.22).

Sophomore Sung Lee had a pair of first place finishes as he won the 200 fly (1:53.87) and the 100 fly (49.51). Richard Kogut added a third place finish in the 200 fly (1:57.12) and Metzler was fourth in the 100 fly (51.97).

Sears also had a productive meet. He finished first in the 100 breaststroke (0:58.35) and was third in the 200-breast (2:12.00).

Hussey contributed a pair of second place finishes in the 200 free (1:44.34) and the 500 free (4:41.46). He also took third place in the 400 IM (4:07.21). Sophomore Nick Pacitti finished third in the 500 free (4:43.59) and the 1000 free (9:44.84).

Freshman Jack Still was third in both of the diving events. He had 247.04 points in the one-meter dive and 250.20 in the three-meter dive.

In the 100 backstroke, Rutigliano led Loyola with a third place finish (51.02) while Brooks was fourth (52.25).

Casey Brown was the Greyhounds’ top swimmer in the 200 back as he finished second (1:54.00). Mark Boran finished fourth (1:54.95) for Loyola.

In the women’s competition, Koegl took first in the 100 fly with her pool record time of 56.36. She also added a third place showing in the 200 fly (2:08.06).

Walsh touched the line first in the 100 back (58.07) and was second in the 200 back (2:08.18). Cronin finished first in the 100 breast (1:04.83) and was second in the 200 breast (2:21.76) to teammate Emma Schouten.

Schouten won the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.13. She was also runner-up in the 1000 free (10:28.36) and the 400 IM (4:36.57).

Dickey took third place in the 50 free (24.44) and was fourth in the 100 free (53.42).

Anne Hayburn contributed a fourth place finish in both the 200 breast (2:21.76) and the 100 fly (0:59.13). Freshman Lauren Joyce led Loyola in the 500 free by placing fourth (5:18.04), and she was also fourth in the 200 free (2:00.46).

Abby Andrews added a third place finish in the 100 breast (1:08.84) while Molly Davis was fourth in the 200 fly (2:10.39).

The Greyhounds received a number of points in the diving events. Allison Echevarria was second on the one-meter dive (203.69) and the three-meter dive (206.46). Jessica Stolfi was third on the one-meter (196.49) and the three-meter (196.05). Anna Donato took fourth on the three-meter dive with 115.68 points while Elizabeth Berta was fourth on the one-meter dive (182.25).

Loyola’s swimming and diving programs return to action next weekend, hosting the two-day Thomas Murphy Invitational. The meet starts on Friday at 5 p.m. and resumes the following morning at 10 a.m.
