Lancaster YMCA’s Blake Fry Verbally Commits to Cleveland State

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Blake Fry from Canal Winchester, Ohio has announced his intention to swim for Cleveland State beginning in the fall of 2020. He will join Aiden Morris in the class of 2024.

“I’m proud to announce my commitment to swim at Cleveland State University! Thankful for my coaches, family, and friends that have all helped me get to where I am today. I can’t wait to be a part of such a great team, go Vikings!!”

Fry, who has specialized in breaststroke and distance freestyle in high school, is in the middle of his senior year season at Canal Winchester High School. He is a three-time OHSAA Division I state qualifier who placed 10th in the 100 breast (57.65) and 19th in the 500 free (4:41.13) at the 2019 state meet. In club swimming, where he represents Lancaster YMCA Swim Team, Fry competed at 2019 YMCA Long Course National Championships, finaling in the 50 breast (13th), 100 breast (10th), 200 breast (14th), and 200 IM (9th). He finaled in all four events, placing 13th in the 50 breast, 10th in the 100 breast, 14th in the 200 breast, and 9th in the 200 IM. He went best times in the 50 breast (30.28), 100 breast (1:06.42), and 200 IM (2:10.49), dropping 7.1 seconds year-over-year in the IM. In an interview with ThisWeekSports.com last week, Fry said, “Over the summer, I had some good drops in my IM. That was long course, but I hope that translates to short course. I will try to hang on to the breaststroke and do that and the IM. In college, I am looking to do more IM and breaststroke events instead of breaststroke and distance. It’s about making that transition now, and seeing that drop over the summer really made me realize what I can do.”

Fry’s best times would have scored in the B finals of the 100 breast and 200 breast at 2019 Horizon League Championships. He would have been very close to scoring range (the Horizon League only scores an A final and a B final) at the conference meet in the 1650 free, 500 free, and 400 IM.

Top SCY times:

  • 100 breast – 57.04
  • 200 breast – 2:05.29
  • 200 IM – 1:58.47
  • 400 IM – 4:09.79
  • 500 free – 4:40.48
  • 1000 free – 9:45.96
  • 1650 free – 16:16.50
