Koutsouveli Breaks Houston 200 IM School Record At AAC Championships

After day 2 at the American Athletic Conference Championships, the Houston women and Cincinnati men hang on to modest leads of 42 and 37 points respectively.

Women’s Meet

Pool records fell in all four women’s events, as the new SMU pool is in its first season of use for varsity competition. The biggest highlight came in the 200 IM, as Houston’s Eleanna Koutsouveli broke her own school record of 1:59.85 in a time of 1:58.68, with teammate Peyton Kondis (1:59.68) earning the runner-up slot. Also of note in the 200 IM was SMU’s Andrea Podmanikova, clocking a sizzling 1:59.00 from the B-final.

Houston grabbed another win in the 500 free, as Zarena Brown (4:44.59) topped Connecticut’s Emma Smith (4:46.49). Cincinnati’s Katherine Gob (22.80) took down the 50 free over SMU’s Erin Trahan (22.99), while East Carolina (1:31.24) edged out Houston (1:31.47) in the 200 free relay.

Houston holds the lead with 299 points, while Cincinnati isn’t far behind with 257. East Carolina (237), Southern Methodist (204) and Connecticut (203) round out the top five.

Men’s Meet

On the men’s side, SMU grabbed a pair of wins from Jonathan Gomez and Nicholas Badsky. Gomez topped the 500 free field in 4:19.26, while Badsky won the 50 free in 20.13. Din Selmanovic (4:20.01) led a 2-3-4 finish for Cincinnati in the 500, while East Carolina’s Gustavo Santos (20.33) finished as the runner-up in the 50.

In the 200 IM Dominic Polling of Cincinnati came out on top in 1:46.07, with Matthew Dagenais (1:47.36) leading a 2-3-4-5 finish for Connecticut. A pair of sub-20 relay splits from Santos (19.98) and Gavin Erdmann (19.99) earned East Carolina the win in the 200 free relay (1:20.49), with Ralph Koo (19.83) and Alex Fortman (19.84) posting the top splits for 2nd and 3rd place finishers SMU (1:20.64) and Cincinnati (1:20.93).

Cincinnati holds the points lead with 296, followed by East Carolina at 259. Connecticut (233) and Southern Methodist (219) aren’t far behind.
