Bob Bowman’s class of 2020 keeps getting larger, now with breaststroker James Scott committing to the Sun Devils. Scott, who has Winter Juniors cuts in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke, trains with King Aquatic Club.

Scott’s Top Times

  • 100 breast – 56.60/1:05.42
  • 200 breast – 2:05.10/2:24.57

Over the last three seasons, Scott has had tremendous time drops in the breaststroke events. Take a look at the chart below:

  2013 2014 2015
100 breast 1:03.39 59.56 56.60
200 breast 2:21.20 2:10.91 2:05.10

Scott might be a huge steal for ASU, as his improvement curve suggests that he is heading in a very exciting direction. ASU has a deep breaststroke program led by senior Thibaut Capitaine and sophomore Christian Lorenz, both 53 lows in the 100 and well under 2:00 in the 200. While Capitaine will graduate after this season, two of ASU’s freshmen are great breaststrokers (Daniel Comforti is 55/2:01 while Matthias McManus is 56/2:06), which makes for a deep group for Scott to join next fall.

Every 100 breaststroker that didn’t swim exhibition made it back for finals at last year’s PAC-12 Champs (there was actually only 22 swimmers competing for 24 final spots), but for perspective, 24th place in the 100 was a 57.12 and a 2:02.56 in prelims made the C final in the 200. Scott has a great shot at contributing in both events as a freshman, especially if he continues to improve at such a rapid rate.

In addition to Scott, the ASU men’s class of 2020 includes 4-time Olympic Trials qualifier Zachary Poti, distance freestyler Sidney Kao, Norwegian freestyler Nils Lervik, and versatile talents Joe Molinari and Cameron Craig.

I’m surprised that James is leaving WA considering his attachment to his girlfriend, Jenna. 😉
