The University of Manitoba’s Kelsey Wog has been named Canada West Female Athlete of the Year for the 2019/2020 season. In her fourth year competing for Manitoba, she picked up 4 gold medals at the 2020 USports Championships. For her dominant performance, Wog was also named the Female Swimmer of the Meet.

Wog’s 2020 Winning Times

  • 50 breaststroke (LCM) – 31.21
  • 100 breaststroke (LCM) – 1:06.44 (meet record)
  • 200 breaststroke (LCM) – 2:22.42 (meet record)
  • 200 IM (LCM) – 2:10.87 (meet record)

Wog led the Manitoba women’s team to a 12th place finish at the meet, improving upon their 14th place performance in 2019. Additionally, she was fast enough to set new meet records in 3 out of 4 of her winning events at the meet. Wog was better than previous record holders Fiona O’Doyle in the 100 breast (1:07.76, 2015) and Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson in the 200 IM (2:12.85, 2016). In the 200 breast, she beat her own record of 2:25.50 that she set at last year’s championship meet.

Internationally, Wog had a breakout 2019 year, claiming 6th place at the World Championships in the 200 breast with a 2:25.14. Additionally, she took part in the premiere season of the International Swimming League, racing for the Cali Condors. Wog notched a second-place finish in the 200 breast and a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM at Las Vegas finale meet, helping the Condors to a 3rd place finish overall

Wog’s performances this year placed her at the top of the Canadian women’s rankings in all the breaststrokes, as well as the 200 IM. These rankings set Wog up well for what would have been a bid for her Olympic debut. Wog was set to race at the 2020 Canadian Olympic Trials in April which were ultimately canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As Canada West Female Athlete of the Year, Wog now advances as a finalist for Canada’s national Lieutenant Governor Athletic Award.

If she can split 1:05 low, that will make the CAN medley relay mighty mighty dangerous. All I can say is the US is lucky to have Regan Smith give clean water at the get-go.
