Kaylee Williams Scratches 400 IM After 4-Second Best Time in Prelims at WJ-East

2019 SPEEDO WINTER JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – EAST

The only scratches for Friday evening’s session at the 2019 Speedo Winter Junior Championships – East were out of B and C finals, with no A finalists dropping out of any races.

The highest seed to withdraw from an event is Kaylee Williams, who dropped the 400 IM after swimming a 4:21.58 in prelims. That qualified her 11th and into the B final in the evening – and was also a best time for her by 4.4 seconds.

Williams will instead focus on just 1 race in finals – the 200 free – where a 1:48.73 in prelims put her into the A final. She missed her best time in prelims of the 200 free by a few tenths, and that was with almost 2 hours between races. In finals, that gap would have narrowed to about 75 minutes.

She was one of 2 swimmers to scratch out of a B final, with the other being Andrew Garner of T2 Aquatics, who dropped the B final of the 400 IM as the 16th qualifier. His other Friday morning swim was the 100 breaststroke, where he qualified 17th and will be center-stage in the C final, with a 55.41.

C-Final Scratches for Friday:

  • Abby McCulloh dropped the 200 free on Friday, where she qualified 18th in 1:49.93. She’ll focus instead on the session’s opening race, the 400 IM, where she’s the top seed in the B final (9th overall) witha  4:20.79.
  • Bolles’ Olivia Peoples has dropped the C final of the 100 breaststroke as the 23rd seed after a 1:03.74 in prelims. She’ll focus on the 100 fly, where she was the 5th-fastest swimmer in the morning heats in 53.78.
  • 15-year old Josh Zuchowski, a National Age Group Record holder from his younger days, scratched the 100 breaststroke after a 55.81 in prelims. That made him the 19th qualifier into finals. He still has a swim in the B final of the 100 backstroke, where in prelims he swam 48.44 to be the 10th qualifier.

Among the best record-breaking chances in finals is the 100 fly National Age Group Record for 15-16s. 15-year old Claire Curzan swam a 51.78 in prelims, which just-missed Regan Smith’s record of 51.73. As a 13-14, Curzan was a 50.64 (the record in that age group), and on Thursday, she was slower than her best in prelims of the 50 free before breaking through for a new best time and National Age Group Record in finals.
