Kasia Wasick Opens European Championships with Polish Record in 50 Freestyle

2021 LEN EUROPEAN AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS

On the opening day of the 2021 European Championships, Polish sprinter Kasia Wasick set a new national record in the 50m freestyle, leading a slew of swimmers who broke their countries’ national records in the event.

Wasick swam to a time of 24.51 in prelims, tying for the 4th seed for tonight’s final with Femke Heemskerk. With her performance, Wasick sliced over .2 off of her own best time of 24.74 from the 2019 Polish Championships, which also stood as the Polish National Record.

At 28-years-old, Wasick experienced an international breakout during the second season of the International Swimming League (ISL). Representing the New York Breakers, Wasick swam the league’s top time in the 50 freestyle for the 2020 season, hitting a 23.30 during match #3 that currently ranks her as the 6th-fastest performer in history. Throughout the season, Wasick lowered the Polish National Record in the SCM 50 freestyle a total of 5 times, demolishing the mark of 23.98 set by Agata Kroc during the supersuit era.

Wasick has already qualified to represent Poland at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games, which will be her 4th Olympics overall. However, it will be her first Olympics racing the 50 freestyle.
