Junior World Championships Finalist Teddy Kalp Commits to Indiana

Canadian freestyler Teddy Kalp has verbally committed to Indiana University, as head coach Ray Looze starts to use his strong Canadian connections on the men’s side as well as he has on the women’s side. Kalp will join Donovan Taylor as Canadian men on the Indiana roster.

Kalp is primarily a middle-distance freestyler, with long course bests of 1:50.06 in the 200 free, 3:52.45 in the 400 free, and 8:04.20 in the 800 free. Generally speaking, he’s been better in long course than short course thus far in his career.

“I chose Indiana for several reasons,” Kalp said. “First of all, I loved the team atmosphere, everyone motivates each other to get better every day and that’s the kind of environment I want to put myself in. Secondly, the campus is amazing, with all of its history and scenery. It will be a great place to study and swim at, for sure.”

“Lastly, I believe that both the Indiana men’s and women’s team have a lot of potential to score big at NCAA’s this year; from what I’ve seen, everyone was committed to work hard, but at they same time they know when to let loose and just hang out. I did not expect to make a decision this early, but after going on my recruiting trip to Indiana, I knew that it was the right place for me.”

Kalp’s time in the 200 free converts to around a 1:36-low in yards. It’s hard to convert the 400 in long course to the 500 in yards, but for reference, 3:52.45 is the fastest long course 400 free in the class of 2013. His best times were both done in prelims at the Junior World Championships.
