12-year-old Joshua Zuchowski has broken a National Age Group (NAG) record, going 1:52.47 in the 200 backstroke at the NASA Dolfin Elite Showcase Classic in Clearwater, Florida.
Zuchowski’s is the second NAG record of the day, after Zoe Skirboll broke the 11-12 girls 50 breast record in prelims. Zuchowski’s swim came in the final. He was just 2:00.89 in prelims, but exploded in the final for a drop of more than eight seconds to hit that 1:52.47.
Swimming for the Flood Aquatics Team, Zuchowski has had massive drops in this event over the year 2017. He was 1:59.41 at this meet one year ago, and cut all the way down to 1:54.62 last month. With his swim today, Zuchowski has dropped almost 7 full seconds off his best time since March of 2016.
He previously ranked #6 all-time in the 11-12 age group with his 1:54 from when he was 11. Now at the upper end of his age group, Zuchowski passes a slugger’s row of top age group backstroke names (all of whom set their marks in 2014 or later) to take over the NAG. Josh is a great kid in and out of the water. He earns everything in the water by working hard everyday.
I coached Josh at an All star meet last weekend. His starts and underwaters are incredibly impressive. He’s focused, humble and a nice kid all around.
We’re the USA. Backstroke is what we do.

A 12-year-old boy is faster ( scy) by four tents thN the current wr in women’s 200 meter free.
But then he swam what? About 10 meters less than what Pellegrini did @ Tome so maybe it is apples and oranges.
There are plenty of ways to interpret how fast the kid swam. Consider that at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Swim Championships (a D1 conference with teams like UCSB, Brigham Young, Hawaii, etc) he would have placed in the top-16. 14th actually, in other words he would be scoring points for D1 Universities at the conference level – as a 12 year old.

How is that even possible? Geez. I remember when breaking a minute for a 100 SCY back was great for a 12 year old guy. Congrats.
