Sweden’s Johannes Skagius joined the 50 breast record-breaking party in the semi-finals, lowering his own Nordic and Swedish records in a time of 27.02.
His swim breaks his old mark of 27.16, set at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona where he finished 7th. Despite the record swim, he misses the final in 10th place. He wasn’t the only one to break a record and miss the final, as Japan’s Yasuhiro Koseki broke the Asian Record in 27.17 only to finish 11th.
Nordic records can be broken by anyone from one of the Nordic countries: Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark, and Iceland. Previous to Skagius’ 2013 mark, the record belonged to the late Norwegian Alexander Dale Oen at 27.20.
Incredibly, seven of the eight finalists have gone a best time either in prelims or the semis, or both. An unbelievable 26.96 was required to advance, over two tenths faster than it took two years ago in Kazan (27.20).
Leading the way has been Great Britain’s Adam Peaty, who has taken the world record down from 26.42 to 26.10 in the heats, and now down to 25.95 in the semis.
