Summary/Objective

This position is responsible for assisting in all management aspects of the men’s and women’s NCAA intercollegiate swimming and diving programs in accordance with institutional, NCAA Division II and Conference bylaws and regulations. This position will serve as the director and will administer all aspects of the Learn to Swim Lessons Program.

Essential Functions

This position requires regular, predictable, reliable attendance in the office environment.

Manage and administer all pool usage including scheduling for internal and external events/offices. Maintain daily facility calendar for pool usage by Varsity program at the University, as well as outside groups such as local high school and swim club teams. Learn and educate others on the use of new tools with computer software/hardware for swim meet management, while providing training for additional swim meet managers for internal and external use of Colorado Timing System. Work in tandem with University facility department for additional requests, including summer programming, insurance documentation, and billing. Ensure safety needs for all participating groups through scheduling of lifeguards.

Organize, schedule, and administer all aspects of the Oiler Swim School program, including but not limited to develop and maintain a business plan to allow for maximum fundraising and all marketing aspects of the team. Direct and assist in correspondence with participant families regarding scheduling, instruction level, and facility instruction. Design and implement instruction procedures for all swim lesson teachers through in-water demonstration and in-class learning. Implement and develop skills for supervisory positions that ensure overall safety and satisfaction of a swim lesson program. Develop lesson level programming to ensure children improve aquatic knowledge and skills.Assist the development, review, and implementation of risk management policies and procedures. Implement safety procedures for facility, through guidance and complements to local health guidelines, as well as American Red Cross lifeguarding protocols. Provide necessary facility recommendations to policies and procedures based on new state requirements. Update facility policies and procedures twice annually to ensure higher quality for participants and employees. Follow local guidelines on emergency action reports, enacting new protocols when requested by department officials.Inspect aquatic facility and equipment, prepare and distribute reports on maintenance requirements in a timely fashion. Develop and maintain records to document chemical balances of pool to insure compliance with local and state health and safety requirements. Provide safety and cleaning protocols to internal and external groups. Assist the head coach in scholarship budgeting for prospective and current student-athletes. Speak with and guide families regarding college application, financial aid application, and academic program application processes to provide the best possible outcome.Assist administration of intercollegiate athletic program in compliance with the University, NCAA, and Conference rules and regulations as required. Follow provided online educational resources to ensure compliance as an NCAA coach. Work Environment

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. In some situations, the noise level in the work environment can be loud.

Physical Demands

Walks, sits, stands, bends, lifts, and moves continually during working hours. Is subject to lifting over 50 pounds.  Must be able to lift raise or lower an object from one level to another (includes upward and pulling motion) of 50-75 lbs. and must be able to carry/transport an object/equipment weighing 50-75 lbs.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time 11-month position, and hours of work and days vary depending on athletic practice and competition schedule. Candidate must be available Sunday-Saturday.

Travel

This job requires travel with designated athletic team to competitions and events.  A valid US Drivers’ license with a safe driving record is required, and the energy and ability to travel.  Some evening and weekend work, and some overnight travel are expectations of this position.

Required Education and Experience

2.   18 months of related coaching experience.

Job Duties

– Coordinate and manage all aspects of position/positions assignment as directed by the Head Coach.
– Performs planning, organization and execution for coaching (instruction/education) duties as described and assigned by the Head Coach for all meetings, practice sessions and competitions
– Function in game day organization and assignments as prescribed by the Head Coach.
– Evaluation of opponents and the development of a game plan for student-athlete instruction in accordance with position/positions assignment as prescribed by the Head Coach.
– Perform recruiting activities and responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Swimming recruiting coordinator to meet the objectives of the university and team, including the evaluation, contact, and establishing relationships with prospective student-athletes and coaches.
– Attend all staff meetings as scheduled by the Head Coach.
– Assist in the development of team rules and policies.
– Responsible for supervision, instruction and direction of student-athletes as assigned by the Head Coach.
– Support, abide and enforce all academic guidelines and policies of the university, athletics department and Swimming program to insure academic progress of the student-athlete as directed by the Head Coach.
– Support and work cooperatively with Sports Medicine/Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Equipment, Student Development, Life Skills, NCAA Compliance, Media Relations etc. areas in accordance with department policies and procedures.
– Assist with administrative functions of the Swimming program as directed by the Head Coach.
– Perform duties with professional conduct, being fiscally responsible and with a commitment to student-athlete well-being.
– Abide by all written policies, procedures and guidelines of East Carolina University, the Department of Athletics, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and all applicable conferences or associations.
– Build quality relationships and work collaboratively and professionally with athletics, Pirate Club and University staff, students, and all constituencies and stakeholders.
– Be available to make appearances, perform media interviews, speaking engagements and support ECU Pirate Club activities representing the Swimming program and ECU athletics.
– Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach.
– Nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, and travel are required in the performance of duties.

 

Minimum Education/Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an appropriately accredited institution required. Prior collegiate swimming participation and/or coaching experience also required.

Qualifying degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions and conferred by the time of hire.

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics, a Division I and Big Ten Conference Institution, is seeking an Assistant Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving program. The Assistant Coach is responsible to the Head Coach for assisting in all aspects of the Men’s and Women’s Swimming program. Responsibilities include:

Recruiting, coaching, developing, motivating, and evaluating academically and athletically qualified student athletes all in compliance with NCAA, Big 10, and Penn State University policies and procedures.

Ensuring compliance with appropriate administrative processes pertaining to team travel, recruiting travel, budget, student-athlete eligibility and academic progress.

Alumni relations.

Participating in fundraising and community service efforts, as appropriate and assigned.

Assisting in the coordination with appropriate Communications staff to provide pertinent information to media outlets and in preparing related web-based and written materials.

Commitment to comply fully with the mission statements of the University and Department, including Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics vision to prepare students for a lifetime of impact.

Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree or higher plus one year of related experience for a level 2. Recent Division 1 coaching and/or playing experience preferred.

This position requires the following clearances: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check. Due to the financial and fiduciary responsibilities of this position, successful completion of a credit history check will be required. This position requires that you operate a motor vehicle as a part of your job duties. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of a motor vehicle records check will be required.
