2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

MEN’S 4×50 FREESTYLE RELAY – PRELIMS

  • 2014 World Champion – Russia, 1:22.60
  • World Record – Russia, 1:22.60, 2014
  • Championship Record – Russia, 1:22.60, 2014

Top 8:

1. USA, 1:25.01
2. RUS, 1:25.33
3. JPN, 1:25.51
4. NED 1:26.20
5. RSA, 1:26.20
6. BLR, 1:27.02
7. FRA, 1:27.43
8. CHN, 1:27.69

The Japanese men surged to a new national record this morning in the 4x50m freestyle relay in order to take the third seed overall heading into finals, putting them in the mix for a medal with the likes of the United States and Russia.

Taking the top seed were the Americans in 1:25.01, followed by Russia in 1:25.33. The Japanese were next in 1:25.51, comfortably ahead of the Dutch who recorded a time of 1:26.20 at the wall.

The time for the Japanese indicates a huge improvement from the previous 1:27.98 record set back in 2011. None of the four that broke the record this morning were on that relay.

SPLITS

The fastest split from the bunch belonged to Kenato Ito who dropped a 21.02 on the second leg. All the others swimmers were under 22-seconds on each leg.

With both Junya Koga and Shinri Shioura in the prelims relay, it doesn’t appear as though the Japanese team has much room for improvement by swapping swimmers for the final.
