Mimosa Jallow, Ekaterina Avramova and Caroline Pilhatsch each broke their respective national 50 backstroke records on day 5 of the 2016 European Championships.

Jallow swims for Finland, Avramova for Turkey and Pilhatsch for Austria. A closer look at all three records, which came between Friday’s preliminaries and semifinals:

Mimosa Jallow – Finland

Jallow was the fastest of the three, going 28.34 to take 4th in her semifinal and grab the seventh slot for the championship heat.

That swim was actually just off the record Jallow set in the heats at 28.31. Previously, the record stood at a 28.38 from a Finnish Grand Prix meet back in the spring of 2015. The former record also belonged to Jallow.

Ekaterina Avramova – Turkey

Avramova barely snuck into the final, taking 8th in 28.49. She finished one slot behind Jallow in the second semifinal.

Avramova also set the record in prelims at 28.70, showing a big drop in semis to make the cut for the medal heat. She now owns all three backstroke records in the Turkish record book.

Caroline Pilhatsch – Austria

Pilhatsch was fourth in her semifinal, but just missed the top 8 with a 28.51. She won’t get another opportunity to swim the event at Euos, but does break the national record of 28.72 that had been held by Fabienne Nadarajah since the super-suit era.
