Ivan Adamchuk Breaks BLR Junior 200 IM Record, Now #5 Euro 18&U Time in 2021

Over the weekend, the four-day 2021 Belarus Open meet wrapped in Brest. After a plethora of national records and junior records broken, Brest native Ivan Adamchuk set the lone record of the day, nailing the junior record in the 200 IM.

Adamchuk won the IM final at 2:03.21, shaving 1.31s off his former best of  2:04.52. Adamchuk is now the 5th-fastest European junior swimmer (18&U) in this event this season.

In the men’s 50 fly, the top three finishers were separated by 0.11s, led by Russian Roman Shevlyakov at 23.28. Touching out fellow Belarusian Grigori Pekarski by three one-hundredths, 23.36 to 23.39, for second place was Yauhen Tsurkin. Both Tsurkin and Pekarski now rank 13th and 14th in the world this season for the 2020-2021 season. Shevlyakov currently ranks 9th in the world rankings at 23.25 from the 2021 Russian Championships.

Winning the men’s 200 breast was Ilya Shymanovich, registering a new season best time of 2:12.82, easily swimming under the 2:14.26 Olympic B cut. Shymanovich’s lifetime best in this event sits at 2:10.97 from the 2019 Belarus Championships. The automatic Olympic-qualifying standard for Tokyo is a 2:10.35. Placing second in the event was Ukraine’s Maksym Tkachuk, also making the Olympic B cut time with a  2:13.64.

Just off the women’s 200 back automatic cut was another Ukrainian, Daria Zevina. She took the event at 2:11.06, just 0.67s off the FINA Olympic A cut of 2:10.39. Belarusian sprint star Anastasia Shkurdai settled for second at 2:12.25 while Russian Daria Ustinova took a narrow third place finish at 2:12.37. The FINA B cut standard is a 2:14.30.

Also hitting an Olympic B standard was Belarus native Anastasia Koryakovskaya, winning the women’s 50 free in a 25.29, nabbing the B cut of 25.51.

More event winners from the last finals session of the 2021 Belarus Open included Alina Zmushko in the women’s 200 IM (2:14.73), Anastasiya Kuliashova in the women’s 200 free (2:04.75), and Konstantin Kurochkin in the men’s 800 free (8:09.19).
