Ithaca Bomber Invite Day 1

Cornell swimming and diving leads through day 1 of the Ithaca Bomber Invitational on both the men’s and women’s sides. Read on for full recaps from the competing teams.

Ithaca:

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men’s swimming and diving team completed the first day of the fifth annual Bomber Invitational on Friday as 11 teams overall descended upon the A&E Center Aquatics Pavilion.  The Bombers ended the day in seventh place while Cornell, which competes at the Division I level, leads the pack with 543 points.

The Bombers took part in five events during the Invitational’s opening session beginning with the 500 freestyle that sawJustin Barwick finish in 27th place overall with a mark of 5:01.44.  Keith Dougherty finished one spot back in 28th after completing the event in 5:02.88.

Ithaca would earn a fifth place finish in the 200-yard individual medley when Addison Hebert touched the wall in 1:58.06 – just five seconds behind the first place swimmer.  Aidan Hartswick also fared well in the event, securing 18th place overall with a time of 2:01.29.

In the 50-yard free, Aaron Levin finished just outside the top-ten, capturing 11th place after sprinting to the finish in 21.67. Jon Husson also competed, placing 19th at 22.05.

The Bombers would place fifth in the 200-yard medley relay when Keith Bradley, Hartswick, Levin and Hebert recorded a time of 1:37.11.

Scott Hillen completed the 1-meter dive in 10th place overall 376.30.

Ithaca will have a quick turnaround as day two of the Bomber Invitational will begin bright and early at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the A&E Center Aquatics pavilion.

La Salle:

Women-

ITHACA, N.Y.-Five women recorded top-10 times on the first day of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational on Friday evening.
A pair of women finished in the top 7 of the 200 yard IM. Junior Eva Marie Østerhus was first to the wall with a time of 2:07.38 for fourth place in the 52 women field. Close behind was sophomore Emma Smith who touched in seventh place with a time of 2:09.03 which was a season-best for her. Sophomores Hannah Elliott (13th place, 2:11.12) and Danielle Thomas (19thplace, 2:13.45) also swam in the event.

Freshman Olivia DiStefano was first to the wall out of seven La Salle swimmers entered in the 50 yard freestyle race. DiStefano swam a 23.97 for fourth place, just .43 seconds off the race winner. Close behind was junior Kaitlyn Hay who swam a 24.08 for sixth place. Junior Tanawan Sukonthapanich and sophomore Natalie Simunek tied for 12th place with times of 24.80. Sophomores Rory Kearns (23rd, 25.38) and Alison McDonough (31st, 25.63) as well as junior Julia Mann (32nd, 25.75) also swam in the event.

Senior Hayley Miles turned in the top La Salle time in the 500 yard freestyle race as she finished in 10th place in the 52 women field. Miles swam a season-best time of 5:11.46 in the race. Close behind was freshman Shannon Battis in 17th place with a time of 5:16.75 while classmate Siobhan McDonough swam a 5:27.94 for 26th place.

The 200 medley relay team finished in second place of ten schools thanks to a time of 1:47.51. The team of DiStefano, Koelsch, Østerhus and Hay was just 2.29 seconds behind Cornell who won the event.

Men-

ITHACA, N.Y.-Five men finished in the top-10 of their respective events on the opening day of the Ithaca College Bomber Invitational on Friday evening.

Senior Jonathan Cabral had the best finish of the day turning in a seventh place time in the 50 yard freestyle race. Cabral swam a 21.22 in the 65 man field which was 1.06 seconds off the winning time. Junior Strahinja Stankovic was next to the wall in eighth place with a time of 21.28. Senior Cameron Edling (22nd, 22.10), freshman Joshua Williams (29th, 22.40), senior Michael Stein(36th, 22.82), freshman Yashua Lockhart-Derry (57th, 24.22) and freshman Alexandar Holland(59th, 24.34) also swam in the event.

Senior Justin Hughes and freshman Aleksandar Nikolic finished in the top-10 in the 500 yard freestyle race. Hughes touched in 4:45.13 while Nikolic was right on his tail in 4:45.52 for eighth and nine place respectively out of the 47 entries. Sophomore Robby Wilson swam a 5:09.51 for 38th place.

Freshman Jeffrey Pfannenstein was the sole La Salle entry in the 200 IM finishing in 10th place in the 41 man field. Pffannenstein used a season-best time of 2:00.05 for the top-10 finish.

The La Salle 200 medley relay team of junior Jerry Gravel, Williams, Stankovic, and Cabral used a time of 1:36.40 for a fourth place finish in the event.

Springfield College:

Ithaca, N.Y. – December 4, 2015 – The Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team put forth a strong effort in the opening day of the Ithaca Invitational on Friday night.

Kicking the day off for the Pride was Callie Phillips (East Longmeadow, Mass.), competing in the 500 free and the 200 IM. Phillips finished in 5:15.80 and 2:14.97, respectively. Emily Medeiros(Wakefield, Mass.) followed closely behind Phillips in the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:15.14.  

In the 50 Free, Delaney Dyjak (Ludlow, Mass.) finished in a time of 24.92, and the 200 Relay Medley team of Haley Nolan (Longmeadow, Mass.), Medeiros, Dyjak and Haley Cordery (Berkley, Mass.)finished seventh overall and touched the wall in 1:51.46.

Springfield will compete again tomorrow for the second day of the Ithaca Invitational, with events beginning at 10am.

Shippensburg:

The Shippensburg University women’s swimming team completed 11 performances Friday night that satisfied the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying standard as it began its three-day weekend at the 2015 Bomber Invitational with solid performances from inside Ithaca College’s quality natatorium.

SU had four PSAC cuts in both the 200-yard individual medley (IM) and the 50-yard freestyle. Senior Rikki Sargentpaced the Raiders in 2:09.67, while senior Carolyn Meier made her season debut in the event and swam 2:12.25.

Junior Kaytee Garcia also swam the 200 IM for the first time this season and did very well – touching the wall in 2:16.19. Sophomore Nicole Martorella swam 2:17.09.

In the 50-yard freestyle, freshman Sidney Owens was the Raider pacesetter in 24.76 seconds – shaving nearly a second off her previous season best for a new PR. Sophomore Nollaig Noll swam 25.26 seconds, while freshman Carly Alvarado improved her season best with a strong effort of 25.41 seconds. Sophomore Abbey O’Neal also had a PSAC cut with a time of 25.50 seconds.

Three freshmen had season-best swims in the 500-yard freestyle that stand as PSAC cuts. Lauren Ellis improved from her George Mason swim by five seconds, posting a time of 5:13.71. Alvarado and Tori Bingham debuted in the event, achieving respective PSAC times of 5:17.11 and 5:23.56.

The successful night was capped off by a great swim in the 200-yard medley relay. Alvarado, Martorella, Sargent and Meier placed fourth in the event, posting a time of 1:48.90 that is just one second off SU’s season best and two seconds off the NCAA ‘B’ cut time for the relay.

Shippensburg competes Saturday in Day 2 of the meet with 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. timed finals sessions.
