Locke Wins 3 Events, Iowa and Northwestern Split Big 10 Dual

The Iowa men and the Northwestern women each took wins in their Big 10 dual earlier today. The Northwestern women won 190.5 to Iowa’s 109.5, and the Iowa men won 174.5 to Northwestern’s 125.5.

Northwestern’s Lacey Locke was the biggest winner of the day, with individual victories in the 200 back (2:00.11), 200 IM (2:05.33), and the 100 back (55.71).

On the men’s side, freshman Kenneth Mende scored major points for Iowa, taking wins in the 100 back (48.89) and the 200 back (1:48.47), with a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (1:53.39). Northwestern freshman Anthony Marcantonio also grabbed two firsts and a second, winning the 200 IM over Mende in 1:50.57, and taking first in the 200 free in 1:39.28. His second place came in the 200 back, where he finished just behind Mende in 1:48.47.

Carter Page, a Northwestern freshman, swept the men’s distance events with 9:23.96 in the 1000 and 4:34.45 in the 500 free.

Annika Winsnes of Northwestern took wins in the 100 and 200 freestyles, finishing the 100 in 50.86 and the 200 in 1:51.00.

Jerzy Twarowski of Iowa took wins in both men’s fly events with 49.05 in the 100 and 1:49.05 in the 200.

Iowa’s Emma Sougstad swept the breaststroke events with 1:03.44 in the 100 and 2:16.89 in the 200. Her male teammate and counterpart Roman Trussov took the breaststroke events with 55.69 in the 100 and 2:02.65 in the 200.

Diver Olivia Rosendahl, another freshman from Northwestern, won both diving events, winning the 1 meter with 317.63 points and the 3 meter with 347.93 points.

Lauren Abruzzo of Northwestern grabbed first in the 1000 free with 10:09.66 and second in the 500 with 5:01.12. Her teammate Maddy Sims also took a first and second, with an event-winning 2:02.91 in the 200 fly and a runner-up 56.20 in the 100 fly. Fellow Wildcat Mary Warren did the same with an event-winning 22.94 NCAA B cut in the 50 free and a second-place 51.51 in the 100 free, and Ellen Anderson took first in the 500 with 4:59.64 and second in the 1000 with 10:09.66.

Jack Smith of Iowa won the 100 free in 45.18 and came in second in the 50 with 20.66.

Other event winners include Iowa’s Will Brenner (1 meter: 356.33), Almog Oshtein of Northwestern (50 free: 20.41), Andrew Cramer of Northwestern (3 meter: 366.90), Iowa’s Kelly McNamara (100 fly: 56.02).

Iowa swept three out of the four relay events. Their women’s 200 medley team of Allie Orvis, Sougstad, McNamara, and Taylor Flummerfelt grabbed a half-second victory over Northwestern in 1:42.97. Their men’s 200 medley of Mende, Trussov, Twarowski, and Smith finished 1.5 seconds ahead of Northwestern with 1:29.65, and their men’s 400 team of Trussov, Matt Kamin, Jackson Halsmer, and Smith scored a .4 second victory over Northwestern with 3:01.88.

The Northwestern women won big points in the 400 free relay, which contributed to their overall victory. The team of Warren, Julia Pratt, Sims, and Wisnes finished three-quarters of a second over the Iowa team with 3:25.11.

The Iowa team will compete next weekend in South Bend, Indiana at the Shamrock Invitational, and Northwestern will next compete at home against Minnesota and Purdue.
