Indianapolis backstroker/IMer Brandon Norman announces transfer to SMU

Brandon Norman, who is currently wrapping up his sophomore year at the University of Indianapolis, has told SwimSwam he will be transferring to SMU beginning next fall.

Norman is a versatile flyer/backstroker with a good 200 IM and will now make the leap from Division II to Division I. He originally hails from Cape Town, South Africa.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my two years swimming for the UIndy Greyhounds, but I decided SMU was a better fit for me and I was drawn by the prestigious Cox School of Business,” he told SwimSwam this week.

Norman is solid through all three backstroking distances, but might be most impressive in the 50 back at this point, and could be a potential candidate to lead off SMU’s medley relays.

Norman’s Top Times

  • 50 back: 22.41
  • 100 back: 49.83
  • 200 back: 1:48.70
  • 100 fly: 49.09
  • 200 IM: 1:48.92

Each of those times would have cracked SMU’s top 5 last season.

The addition of Norman comes on the heels of two more big pickups for SMU – the Mustangs nabbed two transfers from Saint Peter’s earlier in the week.

Norman was an A-finalist in all three of his individual events at last year’s GLVC Championships, and competed in 4 different Indy relays.
