The University of the Incarnate Word men and women’s swimming and diving team each earned a first place finish over fall break this past Thursday and Saturday.

At the Ouachita Baptist dual meet held on Thursday evening, both teams won every race against the Tigers with a combined score of 340 points to OBU’s 59.

Some stand out swims included senior, Kyrylo Shvets, as he finished in first place in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:30.33.

Zlata Demchenko finished in first place with teammate Taylor Steele finishing second with times of 1:59.28 and 2:01.31.

The Little Rock Invitational on Saturday proved to be more of a challenge for the Cardinals.

But the women got their second overall win of the weekend with 691 points ahead of Little Rock and Rhodes College.

The men fell to second place with 741 points below Oklahoma Baptist’s close 754 points.

On the women’s side, Zlata Demchenko finished first again in the 200-yard freestyle, dropping time from Thursday’s meet with a time of 1:58.20.

Sophomore, Natasha Fung, finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.12 and freshman standout, Cassandra Phillips, won the 200-yard buterfly with a dropped-time of 2:07.75.

Senior, Savannah Meadows came out on top in the 1-meter diving competition with 252.22 points.

On the men’s side of the competition, sophomore, Hector Ruvalcaba Cruz, earned first place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.73 and Krylo Shvets finished the 500-yard freestyle in first place with a time of 4:37.49.

Dawson Martinez finished the 1-meter diving competition in second place with 298.25 points, while his teammate, Jason Checchin, finished in third with 227.55 points.

UP NEXT

Both the men and women’s teams will host Trinity University on October 27 at the Ann Barshop Natatorium. Time is TBA.

Little Rock takes third place in the second annual Little Rock Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans tallied 569 points for the meet while Incarnate Word and Oklahoma Baptist would closely battled it out for the first place finish. Incarnate Word edged out Oklahoma Baptist 691-688 to win the second annual invitational. Henderson State came in fourth with 355 points while Rhodes College came in fifth with 309 points and Ozarks in sixth with 34 points.

Little Rock would shine again in the long distant events led by senior, Tori Fryar. Fryar would end up taking first place in both the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle while teammates Lily KerrClaire Bristow and Rachel Maradyn all came out with impressive performances.

In the 1000-yard, Fryar clocked in a time of 10:34.58 as Lily Kerr came in third with a time of 11:00.29 and Rachel Maradyn in sixth with a 11:17.94 time. In the 500-yard freestyle, Fryar would put up a time of 5:08.84 while Claire Bristow took third with 5:19.11 and Kerr took fifth with a 5:23.69 time.

Samantha Gray shined in the diving events taking first place in the three-meter dive and second place in the one-meter dive. Astoundingly, she tallied the same score for both events with a 348.35. She has now finished in the top three in every competition of the year thus far.

Little Rock’s best relay came in the first event of the invitational as Laura Ruiz AstorgaImre van HuyssteenIsabelle Finzen and Courtney Goff took third in the 200-yard Medley with a time of 1:50.66. Right behind them was Regan Lawrence, Nuria Gallego Murcia, Cassie Sanchez, and Emma Doll came in fourth with a time of 1:51.01.

Claire Bristow claimed a second place finish in the 200-yard free with a time of 1:58. 43. Emma Doll took sixth with a time of 2:00.78 and Anela Everett took 12th with 2:10.91.

Laura Ruiz Astorga also took third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.03 while Regan Lawrencetook eighth (1:01.96) and Charis Won ninth (1:02.36).

Isabelle Finzen would take second place in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:13.08 while Rachel Maradyn would take fifth with a 2:16.97.

Little Rock would claim the third, fourth and fifth spots in the 200-yard individual medley as Imre van Huyssteen’s third place timed in at 2:12.17. Palmer Ristroph took fourth with a 2:13.53 time and Jessie Baldwin got fifth with a time of 2:15.80. van Huyssteen also took fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 107.84 time.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Emma DollCourtney Goff, Imre van Huyssteen, and Laura Ruiz Astorgatallied a third place finish with a time of 1:39.96.

Little Rock will compete next in the Saint Louis Double versus the Saint Louis Billikens and Lendenwood-Belleville Lynx on Friday Nov. 3rd.
