In His 15th Race Over 48 Hours, Duncan Scott Fires Off 200 Fly National Record

2019 BUCS SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The final day of BUCS competition at Ponds Forge saw Scottish swimming hero Duncan Scott produce a new national record in the men’s 200m fly event.

Swimming in his 15th race in 48 hours, 22-year-old Scott fired off a lifetime best of 1:54.43 to take gold in the men’s 200m fly. His outing today sliced .16 off of his own previous Scottish standard of 1:54.59 that he put up at the 2016 Scottish Short Course National Championships.

After casually clocking a morning effort of 2:03.04 to claim the 5th seed in this 2fly event, the University of Stirling star split 54.89/59.54 to edge out runner-up Joe Litchfield of Loughboourugh who finished with the silver in 1:54.72.

With their swims tonight, Scott’s new Scottish record keeps him at #8 on the list of all-time British performers in the 200 fly, while Litchfield maintains his ranking in the 10th slot.

As for Scott, the man owns the 2nd fastest long course 100m free split in history with his gold medal-saving anchor for the British men’s medley relay in Gwangju. You can refresh yourself on that historic swim here.

That’s after Scott already became a two-time relay silver medalist at the 2016 Olympic Games, also making the 100m free final there in Rio. Since then, he also became Scotland’s most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete ever, reaping 6 medals on the Gold Coast.

Let’s drill-down Scott’s mega-schedule here in Sheffield over the past 3 days:

  • Day 1: GOLD in men’s 1500m free (15:06.82)
  • Day 2: GOLD in timed final of men’s 400m IM (4:06.00); GOLD in 200m free (1:42.78), SILVER in 100m fly (52.03), GOLD in men’s 200 free relay (20.81 anchor); GOLD in men’s 50m free (21.53)
  • Day 3: GOLD in timed final of men’s 400m free (3:43.84); GOLD in 200 fly (1:54.53), GOLD in 200 IM (1:54.35), Men’s medley relay yet to swim

He better be at the ISL next weekend because I imagine with a bit more competition he could probably break a few more records. Also, considering the number of golds he got here he could be a contender for MVP (should he compete)

Thanks for the great report Retta. Also, is there a typo in Day 2? GOLD in men’s 50m free (24.53) That seems awfully slow. TYVM
