Illinois’ Top Breaststroker in Class of 2021 Max Iida Verbally Commits to UVA

Fitter and Faster Swim Clinics is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Max Iida, a junior at Glenbrook South High School in Glenview, Illinois, has verbally committed to the University of Virginia. He is due to arrive in Charlottesville in the fall of 2021.

Iida, primarily a breaststroker and IMer, finished 3rd in both the 100 breaststroke (tied) and 200 IM at the Illinois High School State Championship meet last season as a sophomore. In the 100 breaststroke, he’s the highest returning finisher this season.

He’s even better in long course, where he won Illinois senior long course state titles in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes. He’s currently just .07 seconds away from the Olympic Trials qualifying standard in the 200 breaststroke with a best of 2:17.96, and is not far off the 100 mark either with a best time of 1:04.09.

Best Times in Yards:

  • 50 free – 22.61
  • 100 free – 47.47
  • 200 free – 1:43.07
  • 100 breast – 55.52
  • 200 breast – 2:00.49
  • 100 fly – 50.14
  • 200 fly – 1:54.69
  • 200 IM – 1:49.06
  • 400 IM – 3:57.97

When Iida arrives, Virginia will have just graduated Keefer Barnum, who was 3rd in the ACC last year, as well as Matthew Otto. Casey Storch will still be on campus when Barnum arrives (54.12/1:55.30), and with Noah Nichols in the class of 2020 (54.64/2:00.44), the future of depth in the Cavaliers’ breaststroke group should continue to be strong into the future.

Iida trains with the Glenbrook Swim Club and is the younger brother of Sam Iida, a former USA Swimming National Junior Team member, Illinois State High School Record holder, and junior at the University of Arizona.
