Houston Set To Head To AAC Championships

The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team looks to defend its 2017 American Athletic Conference title Feb. 14-17 in Dallas at the Robson & Lindley Aquatics Center and Barr-McMillion Natatorium on the campus of SMU.

STARTING BLOCKS

  • Houston is having a successful season under third-year Head Swimming and Diving Coach Ryan Wochomurka.
  • The Cougars are chasing their second conference title in program history after earning its first conference championship last season.
  • Last season, Houston posted 772 points over the course of four days at the conference championships, outscoring second-place finisher SMU by 96 points.
  • Houston had a record-breaking performance at the conference meet last season, posting nine school records and winning three individual events.
  • The Cougars posted 18 podiums finishes last season at conference, an improvement from the seven they posted in 2016.
  • Houston returns fifteen scorers from last season’s conference meet.
  • This past weekend, Peyton Kondis and Laura Laderoute each recorded program records at the Houston First Chance meet. Laderoute posted a personal-best time of 53.38 in the 100 backstroke and Peyton Kondis recorded a time of 1:00.16 in the 100 breaststroke.
  • At the conclusion of last season Head Coach Ryan Wochomurka and Diving Coach Bob Gunter earned American Coach of the Year and American Diving Coach of the Year honors.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION

  • Last season SMU finished 96 points behind Houston at the conference championships.
  • Houston defeated SMU in dual action this season at the CRWC.
  • Cincinnati finished third with 625 points, followed by East Carolina, UConn and Tulane.
  • Tulane has visited Houston twice this season, getting outlasted by the Cougars each time.
  • Cincinnati is 5-6 in dual action this season, last time out the Bearcats defeated Kenyon 213-87.
  • UConn is coming off of its Husky Invitational and is 5-1 this season in dual meet action.
  • East Carolina is 8-4 in dual action this season and coming off of the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational.
