Campbells and Horton Add Events to Their Schedules in Rio

2016 HANCOCK PROSPECTING AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS (AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TRIALS)

It was not surprise that Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell and Mack Horton all added one more event to their schedules in Rio on the final day of the Australia Championships.

Cate Campbell won the women’s 50 freestyle in an extraordinary time of 23.84 setting new Commonwealth and Australian records. Bronte Campbell finished second in a time of 24.24. Both women were well under the Olympic qualifying time of 24.52.

Bronte is the reigning world while Cate’s time from this evening is the fastest textile swim in the history of the event. The two sisters will undoubtedly enter Rio as two of the favourite’s to finish on the podium along with Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Sarah Sjostrom and Fran Halsall.

Mack Horton qualified for his first Olympic team on the first day of the competition winning the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:41.65 and on the final evening of the championships he added the 1500 freestyle to his event list for Rio. Horton recorded the second fastest time in the history of Australian swimming and placed himself atop of the world rankings.

The final man to earn a ticket to Rio was Jack McLoughlin who finished second to Horton in the 1500 freestyle in a time of 14:48.60.  Both men were well under the Olympic qualifying time of 14:57.82.

Jack McLoughlin. Incredible. Drops near half a minute to qualify for the OLYMPIC GAMES. What a phenomenal situation.

The female sprinters looking mighty and fantastic to see a new generation of Aussie men stepping into the shoes of our greats in the 1500. Hopefully a certain, in my view, drug cheat doesn’t pharmaceutically steal that crown, again!
