Haley Anderson Wins Third 5k National Title With Win Over 10k Champ Becca Mann

Trojan Swim Club’s Hayley Anderson won her third straight title in the women’s 5k this morning at the 2015 Open Water National Championships in Florida.

There, Anderson was in a dog fight with Triangle Aquatics’ Ashley Twichell and North Baltimore’s Becca Mann. They were all very close, but Anderson made her move towards the last turn to really bring it home hard.

At the touch, Anderson was a 1:01:51.29 to beat Twichell, who came second in 1:01:53.63. Mann, the winner in the 10k, claimed third in 1:01:56.66.

Mission Viejo’s Stephanie Peacock, who won the 2015 Crippen Cup 10k earlier this season, managed a ninth place finish in the race, coming in with the tightly bunched third pack.

The second pack that was ahead of them featured Eva Fabian and Christine Jennings who finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The win for Anderson is a big one following a slight disappointment in the 10k where she mirrored last year’s results with a silver medal. She’s coming off a Pan Pac gold in that event.

In that race, she was less than four tenths off winner Becca Mann’s time in very tight race.

With those swims however, Anderson locked in her spot on the World Championships roster. The last time she competed at the World Championships back in 2013, she earned a gold medal in the 5k.

@becky/comple….
Thays what im trying to say. Ive had swimmers swim against some of the swimmers that have made teams at nonUSA Swimming open water events. These junior teamers got owned! If I actually cared about acolades it would be easy to get some as so few people actually compete in these events. I guess I am trolling a little as I dont think the depth of competition is yet nor ever will be what is needed to make a team on the pool. Its nowhere close to being an equal achievement.

So you’re telling me…that you had swimmers…who could’ve been on the US Junior National Team and reaped all of the benefits that comes with that…and you didn’t take them to the qualifying meet???

Well. That’s awfully embarrassing. You let down your swimmers, and America.

As it turns out, open water swimming isn’t the same as pool swimming. That’s like saying “nobody is really the 50 free national champion because Kris Humphries beat them all when he was 10 but he plays basketball now” or “New England isn’t really a watered down Super Bowl Champion because LeBron decided to play basketball instead.”

Man…if Lebron had been raised as a competitive swimmer…your kids would’ve gotten WRECKED. Food for thought.

No, OW is not the same. But there’s no need to trash talk, or dismiss the accomplishments of those that are currently at the top.

It’s sad to see some open water swimmers make teams where they are not even close to the caliber of swimmer as most of the pool swimmers on the team. As a coach, I’ve trained many athletes that could easily compete and win in open water events against these “junior national” and “national” team swimmers. Is this just an easy way for a coach to boast that they have kids on a national team without really being that good of a coach and getting an acolade for a swimmer who is avtually not very talented? Really seems like it.

Wha….?

If you think open water competition is so soft, I suggest you get your swimmers out there and steal all the coaching accolades for yourself.

Tell me more about your better than NCAA Champs (Haley Anderson), and multiple time national finalists (Sean Ryan), and OT finalists (Becca Mann, at 14), and top 3 NCAA milers (Jordan Wilimovsky).

Not to mention it’s been said about some (both guys plus Meyer and Eva Fabian) that the mile is too short…

But congrats on all your success in the pool.

So of our two female open water studs, one swims for Bob Bowman’s program and the other is on Dave Salo’s team. Awesome.

As opposed to where?

Salo’s had a lot of success with open water swimmers… and Bowman is Bowman- like him or hate him, his program does a lot of work and he’s had some good success with HS aged distance girls (Runge and Mann once they moved over, specifically).

Yeah, I think it’s cool that they come from two programs that we tend to think of as being polar opposites.
