Grimaldi takes title – Men’s race disputed: FINA Open Water World Cup Cancun, Mexico

The second stop on the FINA open water swimming world cup in Cancun Mexico saw several of the world’s top competitors hit the warm Caribbean waters that are more accustom to spring break revelers this time of year.  Conditions were a bit rough but not uncharacteristic  for this venue.

As has become customary the race on the women’s side was amazingly close.  Italian Martina Grimaldi took first in a time of 2:12:37 just one second over reigning world champion Poliana Okimoto of Brazil.  Okimoto’s teammate Ana Marcela Cuhna was just 2 seconds off the leader.   Top American finishers were Christine Jennings 4th, Eva Fabian  10th, and Haley Anderson 13th and Tristan Baxter 14th.

Official men’s results are currently under dispute and we’ll be updating as they become available.

Thanks to Coach Dave Kelsheimer of Team Santa Monica for share insight from the venue.  Coach Dave is developing one of the nation’s top open water programs.   Currently training with him are Jordan Wilomovsky, Brendan Casey and Polish standout Mateusz Sawrymowicz.  Unfortunately Wilimovsky withdrew from competition due to illness.
