Grand Valley State Men, Northern Michigan Women Hold Early Lead At GLIAC Champs

Grand Valley State completed day one at the 2020 GLIAC Swimming & Diving Championships at Saginaw Valley State. The Laker men lead the way with 190 points, followed by Wayne State (178) and Northern Michigan (123). The GVSU women are second (177.5), behind Northern Michigan (206.5) and in front of Wayne State (154.5). The GLIAC Championships will run through Saturday (Feb. 22).

Women
1000 Free – Melina Goebel captured her ninth individual GLIAC title and third consecutive 1000 free crown when she hit the wall first in 10:05.63*. GVSU has now won five consecutive 1000 free titles. Neta Shiff was third (10:14.42)*, Erin Jacob eighth (10:20.07)* and Bianca Licari 10th (10:32.42).

200 IIM – Samantha Laurich hit the wall fifth in a time of 2:05.09*. Dayna Borregard touched 11th (2:08.86), Delaney Wihebrink 12th (2:09.27) and Freyja Garbaccio 13th (2:10.14).

50 Free – Kelly Peasley finished fourth in a time of 23.94*, followed by Rebecca Farber in fifth (24.15), Claire Meeuwsen in sixth (24.18) and Meda Kulbaciauskaite in10th (24.34).

200 Medley Relay – The relay team of Melina De Cort, Delaney WihebrinkMeda Kulbaciauskaite and Claire Meeuwsen finished second in a time of 1:44.31.

3-Meter Diving – Mikayla Karasek finished third with a score of 433.35, while Nicole Taormina rounded out the top eight with a score of 393.90. Nicole Carlson finished ninth (385.55), Allyson Schafer 10th (384.55) and Stephanie Van Nuil 14th (341.65).

Men

1000 Free – Jesse Goodyear captured the GLIAC title and broke his own GVSU record when he hit the wall in 9:10.35*. Moritz Bartels finished sixth (9:29.54)*, David Turner finished seventh (9:30.88)*, Cade Vruggink eighth (9:33.53) and Austin Cabel 12th (9:39.93).

200 IM – Harry Shalamon won the GLIAC title in a time of 1:46.71*, followed by Keegan Hawkins in third (1:48.83)*, Roger Miret Sala in fourth (1:50.19)*, Evan Dies in 13th (1:54.03) and Trevor Sallee in 14th (1:54.20).

50 Free – Oscar Saura Armengol finished second (20.42)*, Dzmitry Novikau ninth (20.59)*, and Noah Ellis 12th (21.21).

200 Medley Relay – The Lakers’ relay team of Shalamon, Hawkins, Saura Armengol and Novikau hit the NCAA A cut with a time of 1:28.85.

SAGINAW, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Swim and Dive teams embarked in the 2020 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships Wednesday. Through their first day of finals, the women’s team won two events and stand in first with 206.5 points while the men hold third with 123 points.

  GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE WHO WAIT

The 1000-yard freestyle proved to be a proud event for the Wildcats as both the men and women teams were among the top. On the women’s side, junior Gabriella Spajic (Sydney, Australia) claimed second place overall, touching the wall at 10:10.62. Following close behind was freshman Maria Arakelian (Livonia, Mich.) who finished with a time of 10:17.02. For the men, junior Ondrej Zach (Rudolfov, Czech Republic) placed second with a time of 9:16.82.

  TALENTED IN ALL FOUR STROKE

Senior Rachel Helm (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) claimed the 200-yard individual medley for the women, hitting the wall at 2:03.10. Just behind Helm was freshman Michaela Nelson (Sun Prairie, Wis.), finishing at 2:04.22. Also in the top eight were freshman Jenna Joerger (Eagan, Minn.) and sophomore Briana Arnold (Black Creek, Wis.) who finished sixth in 2:05.49 and eighth at 2:10.46, respectively.

The men also had success in the 200-yard individual medley, with three individuals placing in the top eight. Freshman Erikas Kapocius (Ignalina, Lithuania) hit the wall at 1:50.68 to claim fifth, followed immediately by sophomore Filpe Lemos (Curitiba, Brazil) at 1:52.60. Senior Jonas Reinhold (Nienhagen, Germany) finished the trend by touching seventh with a time of 1:53.47.

  OVER IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE

Junior Margaret Vaitkus (Munster, Ind.) took the 50-yard freestyle for the Wildcats, finishing in 23.51. Senior Lajos Budai (Kecskemet, Hungary) made the podium for the men, placing sixth with a time of 20.52.

  TEAM SPORT

The women finished the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:44.40 for third overall. The team consisted of Joerger, Helm, freshman Meritxell Font Cantarero (Girona, Spain), and Vaitkus. The men’s team of Budai, freshman Roberto Camera (Rozzano, Italy), sophomore Jon Busse (Stillwater, Minn.), and Amir Saman Khajegi (Mashhad, Iran) also took third in the event, touching the wall at 1:29.55.

  DIVERS

Sophomore Mary Grossman (Goshen, Ind.) led the Wildcats in the women’s 3-meter dive. Grossman finished with a score of 441.95 to take second overall. Following her was freshman Amanda Baird (Riverside, Calif.) finished in fourth with 408.30 points, and senior Jamie Kimble (Prior Lake, Minn.) with 398.60 points to take seventh.

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats will hit the pool again for day two of competition Thursday, competing in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 400-yard medley relay, and the men’s 1-meter dive.
