Down goes the 100 free: Ryan Hoffer breaks third NAG record of Winter Juniors in prelims

For the third day in a row, Ryan Hoffer of Scottsdale has broken a National Age Group record. Saturday, it was his own 100 free mark in the 15-16 age group.

Hoffer went 43.05 in the preliminary heats to take .08 off the NAG record he set earlier this year. He should have a great shot to take the record under 43 seconds tonight, as all of his finals swims have been faster than his preliminaries so far this week.

Hoffer was out quick, going 20.52 to his feet at the 50-yard mark, and is the top seed in tonight’s final by well over a second.

Hoffer’s splits:

  • First 50: 20.52
  • Second 50: 22.53
  • Final time: 43.05

Hoffer broke the 50 free NAG record for 15-16s twice on Thursday, then added the 100 fly record in last night’s final. Tonight’s final could be his 5th record-breaking swim of the weekend so far, and he could also become the first 16-and-under to break 43 seconds in the 100 free.

Also keep an eye out for the meet record of 42.85 set by Caeleb Dressel last year. Once Hoffer ages up, he’ll have to go after Dressel’s 17-18 NAG record, which stands at 18.94, also from this meet a year ago.
