GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming – 4/22/2021

In our GMX7 Weekly Wonders of Age Group Swimming series, we celebrate swimmers of every age and experience level with age group profiles of some recent results.

Leah Shackley, 14, Blair Regional Hollidaysburg Area YMCA (BRY-AM): Shackley hit a bunch of new best times in short course yards in March, and transitioned that speed over to long course meters in April. Her 100 back (1:04.23) was a high point, cutting almost eight seconds from her previous best. Shackley also hit best times in the 50 free (28.06), 100 free (1:00.91), 200 back (2:29.70) and 100 fly (1:07.90).

Logan Noguchi, 15, Rancho San Dieguito (RSD-SI): Noguchi has been on a tear in the 200-yard events lately. His April highlight was a new career-best 1:51.19 in the 200-yard IM, cutting 3.8 seconds from his previous best. Noguchi also dropped a half-second for a 1:40.50 in the 200 free.

Owen Ekk, 12, Area Tallahassee Aquatic Club (ATAC-FL): 12-year-old Ekk made his 200-yard back debut, blasting a 2:01.41. That immediately moves him to #80 all-time in USA Swimming’s 11-12 ranks. Ekk also dropped two and a half seconds to go 2:22.39 in the 200-yard breast.

Katie McCarthy, 16, Edina Swim Club (EDI-MN): In Minnesota, 16-year-old McCarthy hit personal bests in three different freestyle events. Most notable was a drop from 1:49.70 to 1:48.55 in the 200 free. But McCarthy also cut from 4:51.19 to 4:48.32 in the 500 and from 24.25 to 23.72 in the 50 free.
